Thank you so much! When you say freshman register together - they do register for different levels of classes, so if they can claim their AP credit beforehand, they will be able to register for subsequent classes. And if the score is not out before they register classes, will they have to register for first-year classes that they would have qualified to skip had their AP scores been out?
Yes, they register for different classes. Sophomores and up will already have registered so space may be limited in those classes so that may be more the issue. Since it sounds like orientation is going to be virtual and there is no benefit to registering in June or July for first time registrants, you may be better off waiting until after scores are in to register. An advisor will go through with you what courses you need to take and if you need to take a FIG or not. My daughter is in BHP so they donât require FIGs. First year the business classes are very clear for her program and then you just take electives or other gened requirements.
The problem with trying to take something ahead, for instance Calc 3 if you donât have Calc 1 &2 credit, is that if you donât earn the credit, you then have to wait until later to go through add/drop and thereâs no gurantee you can get into those courses which may already be full. There may also be pre-requisites to sign up for a higher level course so you may not be able to do that. You will want to check with your advisor for that. It wasnât an issue for mine because the AP classes she was waiting for were not going to affect her first semester schedule since she already had the AP credit for the required classes and took classes like the Visual Arts requirement, UGS, her Business class, Gov(which she didnât take - most Texans take that but we are OOS) and she took Psych to meet that category requirement (which is the one she couldâve taken in hs but took other APs instead.
@rbc2018 Yes, you use credit at any time so if she now wants to use her Spanish she can. BHP/McCombs now has a foreign language requirement so she would take the credit unless she met it through high school equivalency which I think is the other way to meet it and she has that as well. But in her case she entered early enough that they didnât have the language requirement which is new Fall 2020.
Thank you so much for sharing your insight! Super helpful!
One more question though - if orientation is virtual, why is there âno benefit to registering in June or July for first time registrantsâ? thank you!
So if a class has 100 seats and there are 10 virtual (or in person) registrations, they only open 10 seats per orientation section. So, you have an equal chance at getting in that class if youâre in the first orientation or the last.
For some, freshman registration doesnât go so well and you need to have a lot of backups. For others, it can be very successful. One nice thing they have though is you can put yourself on a waitlist in some cases and a swap. Which means if a space opens up during the add/drop period you already have it set up to swap one class out for another. You also can see where you are on the waitlist.
@ eliorsinclair, I am new to this website, is there any way to contact privately? I need to exchange some information.
Thanks again!
Not sure - we are supposed to private message. Can you message me?
My son has deposited at UT. Any advice on what he should be doing now for rush? We are not from Texas and there are no students from his high school currently in attendance at UT.
What exactly do you mean by what should you do for rush? Do you mean fraternities/sororities?
Isnât that in the fall once you arrive at the campus?
There are some fraternities that give out their bids throughout the summer before students arrive on campus. This is not true for all of them and and there are also many other organizations like spirit groups, etc that are available once classes start. Though it does require some effort, if your son is interested in one of the fraternities that rushes during the summer, I would encourage him to use his network to connect with current students - there will be some weekends this spring that high school seniors are invited to various events/parties. Again, there definitely are opportunities once they arrive in the Fall, I just want to alert you that some of this activity is happening throughout the spring and summer. Sorority rush also happens before classes start, but their rush is a more formal process, happening over the course of about one week.
geez⊠Im from NJ so that seems like sort of BS if that is how its done. I have never heard of that- but donât know much. Is there a way to sign up? How do you get more info? Visiting UT now- this weekend.
Have a great visit! Today starts UTâs Spring Break so it may be quiet around campus. My only advice would be to have your son connect with current students.
The guys ( fraternities) start to have parties in the spring semester and during the summer. If you are from OOS and interested, private message me and I can ask a current student what they do for OOS interested guys.
The Phi Kappa Psi house is 2501 Nueces, west campus. Kind of close to Callaway house. You could stop by there. Some guys from my sons school are in that one. Seem nice
Another one that seems nice is Kappa Sigma Tau - nice guys in that one too. There house is at 1002 w 26th street
You could see if anyone is around there too.
Good luck
It is but for girls there is a lot of prep that has to be done beforehand like collecting LORs which many houses want as soon as possible and the process is ridiculous. For boys they start to informally meet/talk with guys anytime after theyâre accepted but they donât have a formal rush like girls do if I recall. But you can check the IFC website for more info.
Join UT Facebook page for students and ask around about frats. Just stay away from the âsocialâ organization RHO. Do a google search on them and thatâs all you need to know. Frats are not supposed to have parties but they do anyway. My friendâs son a soph just joined one this year that heâs happy in after dropping out of a different one last year. Iâm blanking out completely on it. There are 3 Jewish houses but theyâre not all Jewish anymore and all have a different vibe and attract different types of guys. Best way in as someone else said is to try to connect through someone you may know and they will meet you for a meal or whatever. There are plenty of UT guys on the east coast. A lot are leaving today from campus though as my daughter is leaving in a few hours but campus isnât overly busy these days anyway but youâll get a good lay of the land. Feel free to ask any questions!
For fraternities at least I know the UT fraternities have already started taking the incoming Freshmen out (this has been going on for months). The week after next (after Spring break) is round up - where all the fraternities have parties, so that might be a good time to visit. I donât know when they technically give bids.
I have no clue how to DM. But would love to chat further. We donât have any contacts of guys at UT currently.
I just private messaged you but it was meant for person below. Sorry and please disregard, Covid brain
