University of Texas @ Austin Class of 2025 After you've been accepted....Q&A

I think they are the rage at every school

Okay, thanks, confirms the assumption that all school dorm mattresses are less than desirable!!

One more question about dorm mattresses: Are they the twin XL size?

Yes! Even in the private dorms they use them. Mattress topper plus mattress pad and bug protector.

twin XL also for all the mattresses

The mattresses are all those standard blue dorm mattresses that all colleges have.

Yes, they are the rage at any school with traditional dorm mattresses (aka a vinyl slab).

Haha didn’t know that! All my kids everywhere they’ve lived always blue! 4 different college campuses dorms and sororities who knew?

@ChillyCow One other annoying thing is when they then live in a room with a double bed and you need to buy a new mattress topper and/or sheets the next year!

My son has been at UT for almost two full years and has not had a car by his choice. My daughter will be attending in the fall and is also choosing not to take a car. There have been probably 2-3 instances when a car would have been helpful, all in the first week of the semester. In my opinion, Uber is better and cheaper for us in the long run. So we have a car that will sit in the garage while they are there. At least I am not paying a parking fee for the car to sit in an Austin garage!

I do not recommend a car for Freshman year, especially if joining a fraternity. My son is a Sophomore and did not take a car as a Freshman. He took his car this year. He mostly decided to do so due to Covid - with little going on on campus it has been convenient for him to be able to play golf and do more things around Austin, and he can come home on a flexible basis and does not have to ride the bus (we are in state). However, I think anyone would be just fine without a car throughout their time at UT.

Agree! No car is needed. My daughter is a soph and has not had a car nor has she asked for one. Parking is a pain and costly. Kids uber everywhere. She usually offers a friend money to take her to the airport and if they refuse she just buys them a meal or g/c later. Only if you live where you would need to commute somewhere back and forth do you really need a car, but even then parents can come and pick up kids, or kids can carpool, etc. Also by not having a car parents can save on car insurance. One other thing, a lot of cars get broken into sitting in parking lots.

Lots of the frats have out of state guys - whether you can attend events over the summer or when you get to Austin. Really important to start networking. Look for male UT alums in your area (Texas Exes should be able to help) to see if they have fraternity connections, ask your college counselor, etc. Try UT’s admissions office and IFC office - they may have contacts for you. Also, it looks like the IFC Recruitment registration form is up. Be aware - this is not for a formal rush process. It is more of an interest form that houses can tap into to make contact. Also, look on the “meet the Greeks” tab where you can see contact information for many of the chapters. Email the recruitment email box and ask to be “put on the rush list.” Be sure to give them your cell phone number - a lot of the invites come by text. Since you are out of state if you come to Austin for an event over the summer - try to let other chapters know you will be around so they can invite you to their events too or just get together and hang out and meet.

So I just got into UCLA (!!!) but it was completely unexpected and I kind of had my heart set on UT so I was wondering if anyone here knows people who has been to both or your kids???

Have you visited UCLA? If not, make sure you make a visit as well as talk to people there for sure. It’s a beautiful campus, however, class sizes are HUGE they make it clear in their general info session and on the tour! That was the nail in the coffin for both my daughters and they quickly crossed them off their list and neither applied.

I have not seen the campus unfortunately, and I probably won’t be able to due to a mandatory 10 day quarantine to California. Super sucks I probably won’t go due to simply not being able to see it

Ah too bad. My brother lives in LA and went to UT. Whenever anyone mentions going to UCLA or USC he just always asks “Why?” Lol.

My daughter in BHP remembered that a few kids chose USC over BHP, which was definitely an odd choice, but ultimately similar to your position possibly was the fact that they wanted to get out of Texas and in their cases they earned one of the 1/2 or full scholarships so that was the big difference.

LA is a lot more expensive obviously. But your best bet is to definitely find people and list your pros and cons. Some people like the glamour of LA, some don’t. It is different that’s for sure. You have options and some time so do your research and really check things out.

Yayy congratulations!! That’s awesome! I’m in a similar boat, torn between UT and UCLA. UCLA is a lot more expensive for OOS:(

It’s so expensive. It’s gonna be such a hard decision!

One of my twins got into UCLA yesterday and one was waitlisted. We visited the campus a few years ago and they’ve always loved it, but since she wants to study business and got into BHP at UT as well as Ross/Michigan and Dyson/Cornell (likely letter), and UCLA doesn’t even have undergraduate business, she will decline. We didn’t know what to expect this crazy year as far as admissions were concerned, so she cast a wide net. Even if they did have business, she would probably not go. We have heard it is very difficult to graduate in 4 years because it is hard to get the classes you need, and she’s also wary of the fact that UC schools were entirely remote this year.

It is hard to get the classes you need at UT also. Students complain about it all the time on another website. I think NY Times wrote an article about how difficult it is to get the classes you need, and UT was their example.

What is your major?
