I think t-shirts are given at orientation and got a t-shirt at BHP admit day IIRC.
This is pre-COVID information that may help, assuming pre-COVID traditions resume at UTā¦ I have volunteered at 2 orientations (pre-COVID) and can confirm that every freshman who accepted their UT admissions offer and attended orientation got at orientation a UT class year t-shirt if they went to the t-shirt table and picked their shirt up (those shirts have consistently been burnt orange and they have the theme of the year and the incoming classās graduation year printed on them). Every freshman also gets a t-shirt for their college - my sonās year, they also got this at orientation - he got his when he attended his collegeās break out session (in 2018, the color of the t-shirt was teal/aqua for engineering - college t-shirt color seems to change with each year). The kids wear their college t-shirt for the Gone to Texas ceremony (at least that is what happened pre-COVID). At Gone to Texas, each college has a social at a designated spot near each collegeās main building and then the freshman kids from each college march to the tower together from their meet up social spots for the Gone to Texas ceremony ā that happens the night before school starts. Tip: if you or your new Longhorn want some t-shirts from their college, have a bit of extra cash in your pocket. At orientation, the engineering student association had a table out and was selling t-shirts and sweatshirts. I only had a tiny bit of cash on hand and was able to buy my Longhorn 1 t-shirt. If I had more $ on hand, I would have grabbed more to save for care packages or future gifts. Parents really donāt get buying options for college emblazoned gear very often. So, if you are going to an organized event at your college at Family Orientation or Parents Weekend or otherwise, consider having a bit of $ on hand in case student orgs set up tables and sell shirts or the like. My son acted like he did not want/need the shirt I bought, but since that day, he has worn it all the time. I am sure other colleges beyond engineering have organizations that ātableā at parent attended events and sell t-shirts. So, that is just a bonus tip! Hook Em. Happy Holidays to all. (NOTE: My son did not get any other āfreeā t-shirts from UT-Austin until he attended orientation.)
Donāt forget if you join the Texas Parent Association or are a student you get a 5% discount at the COOP, but Iāve also regularly seen they have coupon codes for 20% off anything.
My daughter must have 20 UT shirts and every time we visit wants another. There are no shortage of t-shirts available. Also IIRC at orientation there is a lot of swag to get also. We have shirts from the credit union too.
She blew off Gone to Texas but Iām pretty sure I have seen both a McCombs shirt and BHP shirt and now that youāve mentioned it, I think I too have seen something that is teal so maybe in 2019 teal was the McCombs one.
At orientation there is other free swag, the things for the back of your phone to hold credit cards and ID, water bottles (although maybe that was at something beforehand because both my kids have that and only one goes to UT), stickers, sunglasses that my husband actually still wears, etc. Their orientation is awesome and a lot of fun. Bring a sweater and an umbrella though. It is hot as hell outside, but freezing indoors.
Does anybody know what percentage of the accepted Engineering students get accepted to the Honors program?
@smithonian29 If you are referring to UT Freshman class general engineering honors, UT do not keep a percentage or quota, any student who reaches certain score will be admitted as honors. The score is based on rank, SAT/ACT, PAI and special condition.
Sophomore to Senior will be strictly based on GPA.
@KaYoung2025, do you know the rank and SAT/ACT score cut offs? Or do they vary from year to year depending on how many students they want to accept into Honors?
@ChillyCow It is a custom metric that may vary slightly every year (especially on PAI) but generally the same, The Texas admission guy wrote a pretty good op that my cousin (BMEN class 2020) said was not exact but very close. Scroll down to the engineering section on page Comprehensive Guide for Applying to UT-Austin Honors Programs ā Tex Admissions
Do you know if the students who enroll ever have access to these metrics? I know Stanford allows enrolled students to view their admissions files.
Honestly my cousin graduated BMEN said Honor starting Sophomore onwards (24 credit hours min to be exact) are more ācriticalā as that would mean keeping up the GPA. And GPA cut off in honor is well known in each department. UT web site states top 10% in each engineering major.
The āfreshmanā engineering honor is technically created by request or formality. That said, freshmen admitted based on the scoring system can get disqualified if they cannot maintain top 10% of their engineering major after 24 credit hours.
Has anyone heard back from CBHP? I got my McCombs acceptance but still waiting on honors.
What is the wifi like on campus? What percentage of the campus has coverage? How is the wifi in dorms? I have to imagine that the wifi gets particularly slow in the afternoons as all the students try to do assignments. (particularly as more and more assignments go digital)
sameā¦ I have heard of a few people get in but not many.
DS got accepted in the early Dec round for College of Natural Sciences. Heās resident auto-admit. This was his safety and heās applying for a few other choices with low admit rates. Not sure if anyone is in similar situation. Iāve a couple of questions:
- When do you have to notify UT about acceptance of offer? Heād like to delay till the other decisions are available - March 2021. This would be the preferred option.
- Does notifying that late impact housing choices?
Thanks
@osibisa You can go ahead and put down the housing deposit to hold your place in the queue then decide about admission later. I believe May 1 is the deadline to accept or decline admission.
Thanks. The way I read the letter, it appeared as if you make the deposit after you accept the admission. Iāll do some more research.
@osibisa, students can put down the initial $50 (I think it was $50?) deposit when they submit their application to get the earliest timestamp for dorm selection. When they accept admission, they can put down a bigger deposit of $250 or something (we havenāt accepted yet) and then they will be offered a contract in March I think. Once they accept the contract, then they can select dorm picks and fill out the roommate finder (again, I think). Then, in June, all the real action starts happening of actually getting into the system and literally picking the exact room and roommate (again, I think). So, long story to say, put down the $50 deposit to get a timestamp for insurance at this point. If your student doesnāt go, then youāve made a little donation to UT and you move on with life! Best Wishes for those March acceptances!
Thanks. As an alumnus, donation would be a good way to think about it. Though I doubt $50 would make a dent for the second richest university in the US
Does anyone have any idea about when we can expect to hear back about CNS honors (specifically polymathic is what I applied for)? My co 2024 friend got her acceptance during mid february but she applied regular and I was wondering if we can expect to hear earlier if we applied priority. I donāt think anyone on this thread has said theyāve been accepted to a CNS honors yet.
Does anyone know anything about dorms? I got accepted into plan 2 honors and psychology and Iām currently picking between Carothers, jester east, and Andrews. I want a good mix of socialization but a nice room that isnāt crappy and has decent room. I will be pre med if that effects any suggestions!
Iām also curious if anyone knows if there is a ācommunityā piano in Brackenridge, Prather, or Roberts dorms or Moore-Hill? I saw in a Youtube video that Roberts had an upright piano but wanted to confirm since the video is older.
@ceces_pizza123, you might try looking at some Youtube videos. There are several for Jester.
