University of the Pacific Brubeck Institute of Jazz

Anyone have any experience/information about this program?

Do you mean the summer institute, or the undergraduate fellowship? If it is the latter, it is IMPOSSIBLE (very difficult) to get into! Very, very, very difficult. I think they take five musicians a year, and they are all exceptional.

The summer institute is also extremely competitive (probably the most competitive of all of the summer jazz programs) but not as competitive as the fellowship jazz institute (they have a couple of players on the same instrument---even for rhythm).

Good luck to your son, SJ, if he is going to pursue this!

Yeah, I always thought this sounded great, too, but so very competetive! Let us know what else you found out.

ok, correction: the University of the Pacific BA in jazz studies - anyone know anyone in the jazz studies program? Though looking at the Fellowship, it looks very exciting and worth applying for--not an overly rigorous process for an exceptional opportunity!

It does look like a really neat program! I love that they have coordination with the Fellowship program. That could be amazing.

The small size could be a benefit or detriment, depending upon the other students. It is exactly big enough for a big band, as well as a couple of combos, which works great...if the students are of similar level and interest. My other concern would be faculty--I looked up the percussion faculty member and he teaches both classical and jazz, which could be tricky. Since they have a classical audition along with jazz, they probably follow more of the model of Eastman, with emphasis on rudiments and technique.

It sure looks like a program work learning more about!

Yes, I thought it was interesting they wanted a classical audition too--probably want some double-duty musicians.

My son is in high school and takes private lessons from this faculty member. He's a great guy and a monster Jazz drummer and techer.
