Hey guys,
I was recently accepted to the college of engineering and sciences at the university of tulsa, now does that mean I am accepted also to their petroleum engineering program, if i choose to take the required courses? or is there a separate requirement/ admission to be chosen other then admission? I have to make my decision between Marietta college, tulsa and University of Oklahoma within the next few days so if anyone has any clue please let me know asap, thanks!
You should [contact admissions](Undergraduate Admission - The University of Tulsa) at TU regarding this question.
I wouldn’t choose Marietta for petroleum engineering since it’s the only engineering discipline the school offers. At least at OU, many students who start in the PE program end up switching to a different field, even if they’re perfectly capable of handling the workload. One of my good friends who had over a 3.2 in PE switched to mechanical engineering because it was better aligned with her broader interests. At Marietta, you wouldn’t have the option of switching unless you’re content with not majoring in engineering at all.
Thanks for the tip, so today is the day…I was leaning more towards tulsa anyway because their program is more prestigious, they also gave me 33,000 in grants and scholarships, the class sizes are smaller and it just seems all around better, i havent received word back from OU on aid but that might be because i havent sent them my scores or grades yet, but was somehow still accepted, i think id rather go for the more selective school anyway so im not usre if hearing back will matter i mean it will be significantly cheaper at OU but the quality is worth the price isnt it? plus if i find other aid options for further years?. how do those loans go over? like the “credit based alternative loan” for 19,000 ill need to get or the other 5000 in loans, i mean im sure ill be able to pay them off but are there other scholarships available to sophomores as well? thanks for getting back so quick, i apologize for my tardy response, if you would be so kind to respond as fast again it would be much appreciated, also please excuse my grammar this was rushed and its a frantic time lol XD
OU goes by what you put down on the application and only later asks for a verification of your scores and grades, hence the acceptance.
I wouldn’t say TU is more prestigious than OU in petroleum engineering. Both are well recruited and well regarded schools in the industry as well as other departments. At OU, all of the supermajors recruit there as well as many majors (this year saw a plummet in recruiting activity however). I would presume the same is true for Tulsa, which you are right, will have smaller classes.
Again, I’m not sure that the University of Tulsa will offer an overall higher quality PE program than the University of Oklahoma. I’m not familiar enough with TU to say that yes, the UG opportunities are clearly superior. They may be, they may not be. I’m not sure.
Break down the cost like this:
Yearly scholarship (grant only):
Loans (break down in terms of stafford subsidized, unsubsidized, parent plus, etc):
Net cost after grants:
OU certainly has scholarships for sophomores (TU probably does as well) but that is an incredibly risky strategy in terms of college affordability.
Yeah it definitely is risky, but at the same time, after schooling is said and done I shouldnt have to worry to much about the loans. But do you think i would get more money from OU? If theyre both good in PE then it shouldnt matter right? But will the fact that TU has a smaller class size be more beneficial? I mean especially with there being cuts in recruiting activity, would that smaller class size be better? I know i shouldve made my decision yesterday but im still teetering between these two, will missing the may 1st deadline make a huge difference with these schools? If you can get back to me as fast as you did before that would be stellar i was just about to email the tu admissions advisor and tell him to send my intent to enroll form but now im on the fence again.
Hi
I just got accepted into U of Tulsa for a non thesis MSE , I am a non american and I am still in doubt regarding whether I should join , because of the recent distress in the Energy Industry and also being a non-american makes it difficult for me to get job or internships can anyone of you please help me with some information in this regard .
Thanks
I’m an international student too, and chose Tulsa over PennState this quarter. They are recognized for having one of the worlds premier PE programs. Actually, when I was looking for advice back home last year regarding to PE, most of people including american lecturers told me about Tulsa, and that 2 PE Engineers from my country that graduated from Tulsa are among the ones working with BP to restore the Gulf of Mexico, so I felt really exhilarated when i was accepted for the Fall 2015 PE.

Seems awfully risky now to be concentrated in petroleum engineering. Might be prudent to major in a less specialized engineering discipline. With all the job losses going on, it’s hard to rationalize why a US employer would want to deal with the hassle of work visas for a foreigner when there’s a HUGE excess of American candidates to choose from.
Demand for oil is increasing not decreasing. Prices are near bottom at $40 a barrel. Equilibrium between supply and demand will be reached by Fall of 2016. Price of oil will be at least $65 a barrel by the end of 2016. So now is a great time to study PE. Should be plenty of opportunities by 2017. Should be plenty of research opportunities in Summer of 2017 at TU and other places.
