University of Utah Class of 2024

Did any of you or your kids interview for the Eccles Honors Scholarship? Were interviews only in March, or did they bleed into April? I have notes that say March/April, but I can’t find where I read that.

Also, were you assigned a specific weekend or was there a range of dates to choose from? Not trying to be presumptuous about DD getting an invite, but also want to leave our calendar flexible just in case

Thanks again, all, for any help you can give!

The interviews are a 15 minute slot and you choose your time, traditionally they have been between 3 and 6pm MT on weekday afternoons, over a 1 week period in March. They are not a traditional scholarship competition where everyone gets together for a weekend. Last year the timing was a bit later because of spring break (I think around March 18-25), but with no spring break it could be anytime in the second half of March. They do let people know the results (including a ranked waitlist) on or about April 1. They used to invite 60 to interview for 30 spots, now they have cut it to 25 scholarships I expect they will invite about 50 or so.

Pre-COVID they used to ask instate students to come in person and give OOS applicants the option to do online. Most OOS applicants, including the successful ones, did online. This year I think it is very likely to be all online again, just like last March.

Our son was not selected to interview for the Eccles Scholarship. I looked back and he was notified on March 10th that he was not part of the interview group. My hunch is that our son looked “good but not great” and that they get so many quality applicants it is hard to stand out. He also has almost all “school based” service (creating middle school tutoring program, working with SpEd students…) and looking at students who won the really big awards (not just at Utah) almost all had service work that was in the community and not limited to school.
