University of Utah Musical Theatre

My D was accepted to U of U for MTP. I see it is a conservatory style program. She is a singer first with very little dance training. Can anyone describe the dance classes, are they at all levels?

Thanks

My D and I visited Utah just last week. They have daily morning dance classes at 8am for every student in the program. They are evaluated at the beginning of the semester and then slotted into one of three classes (beginner, intermediate, advanced).

@danils send @shaun0203 a message her D is a sophomore there.

@FionaDad what did you think of the campus? Unfortunately I can’t make it up there before I make a decision.

Or message me, im a sophmore in the MTP!

FionaDad,

How was your visit, what did your D think of the program/campus?

My daughter is also an MTP student. She had only taken formal dance for about 18 months before going to college. It has been her most challenging class but has put forth a lot of effort and really has enjoyed learning. What you put in, is what you get out :). Happy to answer any questions. We are very, very pleased with our daughters progress.

There is more dance than the daily 8am class. That is primarily Ballet and is taken all 4 years. In addition, there is a twice weekly class they refer to as MT Dance. That class consists of the various elements of Broadway-style dance (Jazz, Tap, partnering, etc). I am not sure how many semesters they are required to take it.

For the person who asked about the campus, it is very nice. Distant mountains are in view at every turn. A great view of downtown SLC. Very clean, with buildings in excellent condition. The Performing Arts Center building, where many of the MT classes are, is in the heart of campus, next to the library, the bookstore and very near the student union. It’s a big school. There is both a bus system throughout campus, and the city’s electric trolley system has three (?) stops on campus making it easy to get downtown in about 10 minutes (?).

^^I forgot about MT dance class because my D isn’t taking it this semester. Took dialects instead! Nice catch @shaun0203

I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to all who have posted here. Since U of U doesn’t have it’s own MT page I was searching high and low for information. Between this and my offline conversations with shaun0203 we are confident our daughter made the right choice in choosing Utah.

Welcome to the Family!

Thank you for all of your input. Our trip to Utah had to be rescheduled from last weekend to this weekend due to flight cancellations. Looking forward to visiting and hoping that my D feels it will be the right choice for her…nothing like last minute, May 1 approaching quickly!

I know exactly how you’re feeling… @danils haha. Safe travels!

@danils - Will you be there on Friday? Are you going to be able to sit in on any classes?

We’ll be there on Sunday and Monday, yes she will be sitting in on a dance class and acting class Monday morning…I think. We will also be seeing Godspell.

^we don’t have classes next week…
