Hello, I got accepted to Hereford Residential College. But I have the option of going there or the regular traditional dorms. I wanted to know the differences between the two dorms. (It doesn’t matter to me if I get the new dorms or old dorms).
For example, how is the lifestyle at Hereford different? What type of people do you meet in Hereford? Do you feel neglected at Hereford since its far from campus and I have also heard it has a bad reputation? Why is that?
Please give me your honest opinion. Don’t just say both of the dorms are really great - List the cons so that I can make my decision carefully.
Thank you
I know nothing about what the residential college is like amongst the residents. However, some people in the past have complained about the small windows and the coldness of the modern architecture.
I’d say it all depends on how much you like to socialize. Stereotypically there is more socializing at McCormick/Alderman dorms as there are lots of spaces to hang out etc.
The tricky part of Hereford is that you’re somewhat secluded from the rest of Grounds. That is seen as an asset by some people as it is quieter and more conducive to studying. Also, I think there are only singles in Hereford.
Getting to Central Grounds can be a hassle though as you have to plan ahead and add in extra time to walk/commute.
However, you do have a dining hall right next to you so that is a plus in some cases.
I imagine it becomes a cycle. The people who are more introverted want a single and the more studious students want a quieter environment, so they choose Hereford, and that makes it a less social place.
Hello! I was wondering what you ended up doing / if it worked out. Also, you said you had the option to live in the regular dorms. Does this mean if I were accepted into the IRC I could decide not to do it? Or will I have to if that is what I am assigned? I am a first year.
