This was mostly directed to Rick12. From some of the threads I was reading it looked like your D went to Virginia, or was at least strongly considering it. I was just wondering what you saw from the program in general. I will be taking a trip down there this summer so I will be able to draw my own conclusions, but I was just wondering what you saw, maybe its general reputation, anything really.

Well, my D did not end up at UVA, she ended up putting architecture school off till graduate school and decided she could not say no to Stanford. However, she had Virginia ahead of Cornell and Rice. I was cheering for Rice, but she definitely liked UVA better. Why Virginia?

Her mother has her architecture degree from Virginia and loved the school. We knew several of the faculty members and had a lot of respect for them.

Our family loves that part of the country.

Despite the fact that as a four year degree it is not ranked by DI, I think it is one of the best design schools in the country and sends a bunch of students to Ivy League graduate programs. In recent years it has been very strong in sustainable design.

The only downside for her was that the Virginia is pretty preppy with a heavy frat/sorority environment. Of course this does not really apply in the architecture school, but she felt that the overall personality of the student body at Stanford was a better fit for her.

Rick Thanks for the quick response, sorry for the delayed one :). Does Virginia offer a strong liberal arts education with the 4+2 or is it more balanced? Thanks

UVA is a strong school for liberal arts, but the architecture program is very intense and I would consider it an architecturally focused program rather than a balanced program.
