Hi I am a Junior in High school and I am interested in University of Wisconsin and Marquette, and want to know if I can get in. First of all, which one has a better reputation, or are they both on even ground? As for my stats I'm looking at about a 30 for my ACT, hoping maybe the retake will get about a 31 or so. I have a weighted GPA of 4.24 unweighted 3.7, which ranks me 20 in my class of 600. I have done 4-5 Honors/AP every year. I got a 5 on my WOrld History AP exam but haven't taken any others yet. I did two years of honors advanced Spanish, honors Spanish 2 and honors Spanish 3. I am involved in NHS, investment club, scholastic bowl, tennis. I also started and am captain of my schools Debate team. I will also hopefully be VP of NHS next year. I am also very involved in my Church, I serve as an usher and Eucharist Minister, I am also in the Youth group. I led a Kairos retreat and have good leadership and writing skills. I should have good recs and essays too. So should I be good for Marquette and or University of Wisconsin? Thanks for your time!

Your in both colleges

I think you’re a pretty solid applicant for both!

Would the only two years of foreign language hurt me?

To years is not great but it won’t kill you

Alright thanks guys, I’m really glad to hear that!

You did not indicate if you were from WI. As with public schools, UW looks at in-state students as priority but offers admission to OOS great students. You look like a great student from what you said. If you have narrowed your search down to the two schools as your choice schools, how does the finances affect your decision if accepted to both? Scholarship and other financials. Milwaukee and Madison have different atmospheres and their schools definitely have differences. If you have school beyond bachelor’s degree planned. I got my undergrad in Milwaukee at another private school. Have been in Madison a lot as my home town is not far from Madison. Niece is currently at UW and loves it. Good luck with the process.

Oh sorry I forgot to include that, I live I. Illinois, I know little about U of Wisconsin other than its a great school, I am a little more familiar with Marquette and have spent time in Milwaukee before, I just want to make sure I can get in!

I may even call Wisconsin a safety for you. Its great that you want to go there, but I encourage you to look around more. I’ve heard U of Michigan has a similar feel to Wisco. Look into that. It’s a more selective school, though. But, I think you have the grades and ECs for it!

I saw another post say they got a $5000 scholarship to attend UW, so cost between UW and in-state IL was much closer for out of pocket.

It looks like you might want to stay closer to home?

U of MI is more selective for OOS and probably would not have any scholarship $$. If it is within the geographic area for you and you want to compare to UW, make a campus visit.

UA has a great debate team. If you are considering OOS schools with great scholarships for high stat kids, consider UA. An on-campus visit would be a great comparison for the other schools - you would be amazed at UA.

UA? What does that stand for, Alabama? I’d prefer to stay in the Mid-west, I’d consider something out east like BC or Georgetown but those would pretty much be the exception. Unless UA stands for something else…?

No UA is University of Alabama.

Preferring or requiring to stay in mid-west? What do your parents say about where to go - finances and distance from home, what you want to study, etc?

More than 50% of UA’s student body is OOS. (Not just for football, primarily for scholarships and great programs/facilities/faculty). Can only compare with campus visit. My Catholic D will be attending in the fall for civil engineering - church on campus and strong with other Christian programs/churches. She went last summer to a summer engineering program there www.site.eng.ua.edu UA Business school has program for those wanting to major in accounting. Some parents have insisted their family visit at Capstone Scholars Day when their student got such a great scholarship package (we attended this event recently), and these OOS families were pleasantly surprised (also many have learned through friends, CC, other about looking at the school).

There are great differences between Marquette and UW-M.

Sounds like you want a campus with Christian and/or Catholic values around you? Probably would find more at a Jesuit or other Catholic schools. Many other public schools have strong religion options near campus.

Your parents may have some opinions on distance from home, money, other concerns or priorities.

Maybe you want to mix with other students this summer at a leadership program both of my daughters attended, and also get a feel for a college campus (one attended at Emory and one at Vanderbilt, students that attended were from across the country) - www.fte.org Only students who have finished their junior year of high school are eligible, so you would be interacting with other students like you - the program is the same whatever campus scheduled to attend. Have to act ASAP with deadline a few days away…

I have lived in WI, TX, and AL. Graduated from a smaller high school than yours in WI.

Perhaps you have a really good idea of what you want, but it sounds like you can find out more in many ways. Also campus visits to schools you like ‘on paper’. The visit might change your mind, both liking but didn’t think you would, and not liking when you thought you would.

My H and I both pretty much stuck to our majors and college (I did double major after first semester of college), and H had to take math summer between fr and so year while I graduated in 8 semesters with honors. H also came from small town in WI (we went to different private colleges in Milw and met during college years - he to MSOE and I went to Alverno).

My daughters had strong opinions on schools (they were happy with in state options). They both found a great fit and both are scholarship students.

Good luck and hope you find the answers you are looking for.

Run the Net Price Calculators for each school you’re interested in. You can start with UWI and Marquette.
You’re in at Marquette and very likely at UWI too. Those would be matches for you.
You need to identify 2-3 more matches and 2 safeties (colleges you’re SURE you can get into, like, and can afford after running the NPCs on each website).
Then you can add any college you wish: Georgetown, Holy Cross, Fordham…
But those matches and safeties should be your priority.

Thank you, that helps a lot! My dad mentioned Alabama but I had not considered it, I thought it was just a football school, but I’ll definitely check it out, thanks!

At Alabama, if you reach 32 on your ACT (or 30 for Engineering), you automatically get into Honors College (LOTS of perks), Honors Dorm (ie., upperclass level dorms that you get as a freshman), and get full tuition. Sweet deal. Lots of high-stats kids come from OOS for that.

Both schools are matches for you. And as was said, you should try to add a few more matches and some safeties.

Chance me back please: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1621158-quinnipiac-hofstra-and-friends.html?new=1

https://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■/profile_detail/7864 check out this girl. she was admitted with a score of about 2100, see if it helps or not.

ok. Google “admit see” u will see the scores and sats of people who already got in. i tried to find it for u but the forum blurred the link. :-(

OP - if you do not have a chance to visit UA earlier - you need to have your test scores sent to UA to start getting literature, and put in an application early (easy, on line, and inexpensive) - very easy to apply for the automatic scholarships. You may want to visit via pre-registering for Capstone Scholars Day (one time a year) or one of the Monday "University Days’ - or Engineering Day (one time a year). Since we are in state, we attended all three, plus have done a few other college tours (however you can see a lot of campus with on line tour). A LOT of OOS students come to see UA before making their final school decision. UA has a high proportion of OOS students.

For eng, also compare what MSOE has going on since you are in WI. H got his degree from MSOE - electrical and computer engineering.

I think you have some great options. If you have more than those 4. However try to visit all the campuses and learn what you can from people you know and what info is available on line.

UA has a wonderful honors program. My eng DD will be part of it at UA, and my other DD is in honors at another school.
