Hey, does anyone know a lot about the creative writing program for undergrads at UW? I wanted to get my major in english with a strong c.w. concentration. Just wondering what any prospective students/current students know about the program and its level of success/prestige?

anyone help me?!

Lorrie Moore teaches there, and she is one of the best fiction writers living, in my opinion. Anagrams and Birds of America are both fantastic books. I’m not sure if she teaches undergraduates, though I’m sure you could find out on their website. I’m not sure that a prestigious under grad writing program is really all that important if you want to be a writer. Usually the prestige factor comes in at grad school–you can go to University of Iowa for under grad, but it’s not looked at the same as getting your MFA from there, and that is probably one of the most “prestigious” MFA programs.

I do think it’s important to look at the faculty and read some of their work and see if any of them strike a chord for you.

Another thing to consider if you want to be a writer when you graduate is your debt level…all the “prestige” of your college degree isn’t going to get your work published, that will come down to talent and hard work. And if you’re trying to pay off loans and have to work a job you hate and it takes away from your writing time that can be tough. This article, about Brooklyn College (one of the CUNY schools–not actually very prestigious!) is very interesting.

Search “Wisconsin Creative Writing Faculty” and you can ready up on the faculty. I’d say Wisconsin has a very good Creative Writing program, although Wisconsin isn’t particularly well-known for the discipline. As for more information about Lorrie Moore, search “On Wisconsin Lorrie Moore” and you can read an interview article about her that was in the Wisconsin alumni magazine. She seems like an interesting teacher, although I couldn’t figure out whether she teaches undergrad, grad, or both. Either way, I’d say Wisconsin is a great choice for Creative Writing!

does anyone know whether the poet/writers rankings for 2011 are for undergrad or grad programs?

It’s MFA but I don’t think you’ll find a just undergrad list. The same faculty teach all levels and admission is very competitive.
