Does anyone know about the Music School? My S is looking at a violin performance major. I haven't been able to get too much information. Any knowledge would be appreciated.

I have heard that David Perry is well regarded as a violin instructor although I have had no personal experience with him. Perhaps Shennie will weigh in?

That is the teacher my S is trying for. He only has 8 in his studio though. Shennie?

David Perry is an excellent teacher. Very soft spoken. He is much sought after and I am not surprised his studio is small. He is a member of the Pro Arte Quartet who are artists in residence at UW so he performs quite a bit with them. I also believe he coaches quite a bit of chamber music.

UW has a strong music program. We know an number of excellent conservatory caliber violinists who are currently attending. A good friend of ours studied with Tyrone Grieve and is now doing his MM at Rice. While Grieve is not as well known as Perry, he is an excellent teacher as well.

My biggest gripe with the UW strings program is that do have any orchestra repertoire classes. Many other programs required orch. rep. to graduate. Students who do not have the opportunity to study the major orchestra repertoire are going to be at a distinct disadvantage if they decide to do orchestra auditions.

Overall, the playing level of the strings department is not at the level of the major programs, but it is strong nonetheless.

Thank you very much, Shennie. My S had a good audition there on Saturday and met Perry who was very interested in him, but said he would only take one new student this year - fingers crossed! It is a "safety" school (if any of them can be called "safe") so we are relieved.

Glad to hear it went well. I will be looking forward to hear results later this spring!

Felicia Moye is a superb teacher. UW is incredibly lucky that she was unaffiliated at the moment of the death of Vartan Manoogian. It was only a matter of time before she was snapped up by a major institution.

Thank you for that information. She looks amazing on paper. My understanding is that she is "visiting" but they hope to keep her.
