I'm thinking about transferring to UNR or UNLV as a Lower Division transfer. A did a year away at the U of Arizona. I had an amazing experience and would recommend the school to anyone. Unfortunately my grades weren't what my parents had in mind for a 30K a year investment. I proved up by getting a near 4.0 at my JC while playing soccer and holding a job.

So there's a little background about me. I picked those two schools because on the outside they look similar to the U of A experience wise. However, I might have some reservations.

I've heard UNLV is a commuter school. While the U of A had a lot of students from Tucson and AZ, I had no trouble making a lot of friends.

Both schools aren't shown much love in any ranking system, Fortune and UNSWR in particular. At the same time, I've heard that UNLV is "up and coming" and 20 yrs from now could hold some clout.

Any help, tips, or commentary would be nice. Suggestions are good too however keep it in the Western hemisphere.

NV is dealing with a huge budget shortfall and the Gov always tried to cut funding to higher ed. I’m not sure on the exact number but everyone will know after the Board of Regents meeting the beginning of next month. Expect news of some layoffs, program cuts, and tuition hikes. Out of state tuition could soon be close to what you pay at U of A and U of A is a much stronger school than either unr/unlv.

If I had to choose between the two I’d go with UNLV unless you are into medicine in which case go with UNR.

The thing is I can go back to the U of A but it would not be a good decision on my part academically. I screwed up some grades and can’t audit all of them…the limit is 3. Also, I think I can get the WUE rate at NV schools.

So you would transfer specifically cause of GPA? would you be happy living in nevada post-grad as unr/unlv are both regional schools. Your job ops would be better coming out of U of A. UNLV does have a good soccer program though :)

I am already out of the U of A…I’m at a JC now. I suppose I could go back, but I would have bad grades on my transcripts/ hurting my gpa. Kulakai or anybody, what would be my grad school chances coming out of UNLV or UNR if I do all the extras: internships, involvement in charity/ non-profit organization, peace corps, obviously good gpa at UNLV or UNR etc. etc.

UNLV is alright. It is a small campus, but very clean is nice. Plus you are right by the strip, which is pretty awesome (once you turn 21).

However, I think you should go back to U of A. U of A has better academics and probably a better college experience. When I visited UNLV, it was DEAD. U of A seems to be a ‘party school,’ thus more social, which seems to be what you want.

Honestly, Nevada is also in a financial mess. You may want to avoid that situation.

Yeah, financial mess is an understatement. I was heavily involved in organizing the anti-budget cut protests and lobbying efforts both this and last year and we’re about to get hit hard with program cuts, tuition hike, layoffs. Your grad school outlook would be much better from UoA vs. unr/unlv at the moment. Both would only be cheap anyway after living here a year to gain residency, for what OOS costs you might as well go elsewhere.

cali trumpet and kulakai thanks for your responses. I’m thinking about staying in-state UC I or USC, or going back to the U of A.

Yeah UCI would be cheaper than OOS at unr/unlv and your grad school chances would be the same if not greater. Good luck.

Neither UNR or UNLV if you’re talking national job prospects. Both schools are a mess; Nevada in general is a mess. I suggest staying away. I’ve had such a hard time at UNR as a freshman not getting any ideas to fly because there are so many budget shortfalls.

I’m transferring this upcoming year and I suggest you stay away. Good luck on your endeavors.
