Realistically, what chance do I have to get accepted to Ann Arbor if my extracurriculars are very unrelated to my intended major? All of my extras are related to civics and government, but I really want to study Movement Science and be pre-med. I’m in-state, if that matters.
Your ECs matter far less than you GPA and test scores. It’s helpful to have one or two related ECs, but you’re probably not going to get rejected for not having any. They’ll reject you for other reasons.
I do not think that this is a problem at all. If you did well in your ECs and get along with others then you are fine.
Of course your grades and references and if applicable test scores will matter also.
Many people don’t have ECs related to what they decide to study in college. IMO the main idea behind ECs is to do something outside of the classroom that you feel is worthwhile and to be involved in your school/community.
FWIW my son’s main ECs were teaching swimming to disabled adults, working on the school TV channel, and community service with homeless adults - and he had no issue getting into a number of fine business schools.
Apply to the college as the person you are not the person you think they want. Your ECs tell them something about you. There are many things and reasons to be involved in activities outside of the classroom. Just be honest about it and let them decide about you the applicant not you the application.
Just as good a chance as if you had volunteered in a Rehab clinic for 4 years. As long as your grades and scores are good, and you were involved in ECs, you should be fine, since you’re in-state.
