Facebook is an awesome way to get a feel for people before you meet them, and to begin communication without having to call some random person and deal with awkward silences.

"Friending" someone is now a verb. As in, "He friended me on Facebook the next day.'....

The adult orientation leaders at S's college were sore amazed at how connected the 2010s were (via Facebook) when they arrived on campus in early June. The student leaders weren't surprised at all.

We recently attended a local freshman "sendoff" social, and S had met (so to speak) 9 of the 11 incoming students, thanks to Facebook.

My kids (rising college soph and junior) don't have a lot of time to spend online. I think they use facebook frequently, and do not do a lot of "social" emails. Facebook is sorta like one stop shopping for the online social communications. Then there is also IM. Emails are more for other sorts of communications.

Facebook is extremely popular with college students. I wish I could view it, LOL. Anyway, I also think it has become very common for incoming students to connect via facebook before moving to campus and therefore, they sort of "know" some kids ahead of time.

I've noticed the same thing. E-mail is sooo old-fashioned, LOL!
