Unsuccessful Course grades require payment in order to get transcript?

I was attending an online college and decided that I needed to attend a local university because some of the courses that I was taking had absolutely nothing to do with my degree major. I was accepted as a transfer into the local college and was prepared to start.Had my official transcript sent over from the previous school and they sent it without the grade of the course that I had just completed. So I called them to get a new transcript and was told that I could not get a transcript because there was a hold on my account. Told me because I had 3 unsuccessful course grades that I owed $7500 and would have to pay it first before I could get this transcript. Told me that I had to pay for those courses because my financial aid and loans didn’t. I don’t see how this is possible because I couldn’t even attend school if the classes weren’t pay for in advance. I really, really want to return to school and am wondering if there is a way for me to get around this situation. Has anyone heard of anything like this before?

Did you register for these three courses? If yes, then did you officially drop these courses? If you did not drop these courses, then you would be financially responsible.

You need to follow up with the prior school. What financial aid did you have? They may have had to return the loan money if you weren’t qualified to get it (dropped the courses too late?) . If that were the case, you may not owe as much in loans as you think you do.

Pell grants.

Are you saying you got a Pell Grant for the online school? Did that Pell Grant FULLY cover the costs of taking those courses? If not, how was the balance paid for those online courses.

How far into the term did you drop these courses?

Is the online school a for profit school?

Yes I got a pell grant to pay for online college and from my understanding it did. I also had taken out a loan that took care of what pell grant didn’t.

According to my Academiv Advisor I had to complete the course instead of dropping it and just retake it.

Most colleges…online or not…have a drop course date after which you are responsible for paying the full cost…even IF you don’t complete the course.

You say your Pell “paid the full cost” but you took out a loan “to take care of what Pell didn’t pay”.

That is a contradictory statement. Either Pell paid the full amount…or it didn’t.

Regardless. It is very possible you dropped this course TOO late and the school is requiring repayment of the loan, and Pell. If that is the case…you will need to pay them or they won’t release a transcript…AND if because this is federally funded aid…you won’t be getting ANY aid until you get your previous account reconciled.

You need to talk to the bursars office about the amount owed…not your academic advisor.

If you drop a course and then retake it you need to pay for it both times. You can get a partial refund for tuition if you drop by a certain date. The academic schedule will list the drop dates that will lead to a 50% refund or a 25% refund. The point at which you will get no refund comes pretty quickly. I agree that you should follow up. If you are using Pell grants and loans to cover every part of your tuition, then you need to try to avoid taking and dropping classes repeatedly because the number of semesters you can get Pell Grant is limited.

While attending this online school, I never dropped a course. And from the financial statement that I received I was paying $1200 per course. I understand what you’re saying but how do I get a bill for $7500 for 3 unsuccessful course grades? None of this information was brought to my attention while I was attending this online school.

In addition…if you have dropped a certain %age of courses…this could affect Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and if you don’t meet SAP you would be ineligible to receive aid also.

I never dropped a course. I know that even now I am still eligible for aid.

OP, so you only completed a single course at the Online school and dropped 3 others?

**Is this a For-Profit School/b and are the completed courses transferable to the local university? Will your local university allow you to enroll without the transcript from the previous college? Do you have an unofficial transcript showing all completed and dropped courses and will the local university accept the unofficial transcript? If not, there might be no other option than to pay the outstanding balance and your student loan will require repayment 6-months from the date of the end of the semester(?) (unless you get some form of deferment).

I think we’re having trouble understanding “unsuccessful,” particularly when you say you never dropped a class. Do you mean you failed? Because of course you have to pay for courses you failed.

I have completed 30 hours at this online college. I have 3 unsuccessful course grades which are 2 D’s and 1 F. I had completely withdrawn from this particular school to attend a local college. They sent my official transcript over to the local college without including the last course that I had completed. Once I notified them that I had paid for the transcript and they did not include the final course grade thats when I was given all the information as to me owing $7500.

Yes they are for-profit

im VERY confused.

In which term did you get the D and F grades? Your last term there?

My last term there I received the 1F.

When did you get the two D grades?

Well, first of all, congratulations on getting out of the for-profit college. (You haven’t answered whether the credits will transfer, though.)

Like Thumper, I’m confused. Can you walk us through the whole thing? E.g. "I took twelve credits in Fall 2016, and passed all the classes, and got a bill for $5000, and paid it all from Pell. Then I took fourteen credits in Spring 2017, and failed two classes, and got a bill for $7500, and took out a loan for that amount, and my overall GPA was 2.3, and . . . " and so on.

I received the 2 Ds several courses prior
