First off, I want to say that my interest has always been medicine and I would love to become a doctor. I was accepted to an 8-year BS/MD program and accepted to Vanderbilt. I decided to do the BS/MD program because of my interests and the medical school insurance. The BS/MD program is at a state university near my home that has a mediocre undergrad reputation but a great medical school reputation. The problem is, I can’t help but wonder what going to Vanderbilt would have been like and if I am missing out on anything. I worked hard to get into the BS/MD program and logically, my close friends, relatives, and I agree it is my best option, but I just feel a little unsure.
Am I overreacting? I can’t help but feel a little emotional turning down an elite school.
I’m not an expert, but I’d still like to give you advice. 1st of all: congrats!!! Getting into a BSMD program is a huge deal! You will definitely be happy with your decision once you are a junior/senior and don’t have to worry about getting into med school like most pre-med students are. Since you intend to go to med school, you made a great decision choosing a state school! Think of the money you can save choosing an in-state school versus a pricey private school. Going into med school with less or no debt will be a great feeling :). Overall, I think a lot of people tend to worry like you are once making a decision in college. It’s an overwhelming change, and it’s hard not to worry about whether you made the right choice. It seems you made a really good decision, but if you’re still worried, keep in mind you can make the most of your college experience no matter where you go. Ultimately, it’s up to you to make your undergrad years as successful (and as fun!) as they can be. Try to focus on the things you love about the school you chose, look at photos of the campus, and get excited! Again- congrats!
