I'm a junior in VA, and I'm planning on moving to the Bay Area for work after college (the tech jobs and location just seem overall better there). I want to major in comp sci, and I don't know what college would be a good fit for me. I definitely can't get into MIT, ivy, and CMU-SC, but I still want to go somewhere with a good comp sci program with job prospectives as the biggest factor. I was thinking the UCs could be a reach for me and good for getting familiar with the area, but I definitely don't want to go bankrupt paying $55,000 a year. The other schools with top comp sci programs are all oos for me, as well.

What are your stats? This will help people to recommend colleges for you to look at where you might be competitive.

How much can you and your family afford to pay?

Just like VA state schools do not have a lot of money to give OOS applicants to help them attend, CA schools do not either. :)

Depending on your finances, staying in-state for school but going for CA internships during your vacations might be another solution. Or with VA companies that also have offices in CA. You’d be surprised at the amount of real-world positions that are filled via networking …

Go to Virginia Tech and save money.

Have you looked at UVA or William and Mary? They have good computer science programs plus they’re arguably the best schools in Virginia

The best bet is a state school. UVA is awesome, Virginia Tech would be another option too. College of William and Mary, James Madison University too

If you qualify, I would also recommend trying UT (University of Texas).
