I'm majoring in computer science and plan on going into software engineering. I plan on working in the bay area and I was wondering would it be better to go to San Jose State or stay here in VA and go to UVA? Would location to Silicon Valley be worth it?

More to the point - Could you afford to go clear across the country to college? Not only would tuition be through the roof, but your out of pocket costs for travel would be very high.

I’d have a talk with parents before I’d get too far down the road of thinking about San Jose State. Great school and if that is truly where you need to be, then fine, but money really does matter a lot in a college choice.

Yeah, we’d have no problem affording SJSU. It’s Cal I can’t afford (almost 20k more per year for out of state :P) Just wondering if San Jose State would be as good as UVA for someone who plans on working in that area anyway.

Bay area firms hire from all over the country. You can still try some away internships in the Bay Area and elsewhere for your summers. Or pick up move into a sublet and job hunt after graduation. I wouldn’t give up the UVA reputation for SJSU. I knew a very successful person in SF who went to UVA but did get MS from GA Tech.
