My DD and I have looked at the older threads about the Altman Program. The application for 2015 is now available and she is thinking about it. However, we would appreciate any new input about current students who are in this program. In looking at the “sample schedule”, it looks pretty intense in terms of credits required - even if you come in with a boatload of AP credits (as she would). Has everyone who started with the program stuck with it? Are you happy with the way it is structured?
@VAmomof4
Since it is a small program (15 a year or so?) the odds of any those students seeing your post are pretty low. What I would recommend is talking to the head of the program at the School of Business and asking them directly if any have dropped out (we would all be interested in the answer, btw) and if they wouldn’t mind giving your email address to a couple of first year and second year Altman students so you could discuss their impressions of the program, or some other way to arrange contact. Since they are just getting back to class next week it is a good time to do this.
I personally have not heard any negative feedback, but it is pretty intense from what people say. If you are successful in this endeavor, please come back with a summary of your findings. And who knows, maybe an Altman student or the parent of one will see this and respond.
FYI, here is the contact info for the directors: http://tulane.edu/altman/contact.cfm
I also just noticed that they have a list of the students that are in the program: http://tulane.edu/altman/altman-scholars-2016.cfm
All 3 years that the program has been in place are listed, and I notice that the latest class has 16 students, while the 2 previous classes list 13 students. Now that could indicate that 2 or 3 have dropped from the program, or it could mean they just did not have as large a cohort that year. Again, the directors could tell you that. But knowing the students’ names, you can simply go to the Tulane “phone book” in the search function on the web pages and get the email for each student in the program and write them directly with a few questions. It would be more polite, I think, to clear that with a director first.
Thanks - I’ll definitely have my DD do that - and we’ll post our results. We did notice that they added the requirement of submitting a recommendation from your HS advisor (? - counselor?) saying whether you could handle academic rigor and stress. My DD doesn’t know her counselor all that well - so that bit could be a challenge.
Well, if she knows someone that could speak more knowledgeably about that characteristic, I would suggest she have that person write a short recommendation addressing it and hand that to the GC. The GC could then either include the remarks in their own or just attach them.
Good idea! Thanks - I’ll have her think about that.
Has anyone heard Altman decisions yet? Or does anyone have a clue as to when they’ll be out? I feel like I’ve been waiting forever (even though it’s only been a month).
My daughter reports that some of her Facebook friends have gotten “yes” emails - and there is one person on this forum who has posted they got a “yes” several weeks ago. We’ve gotten nothing (which I’m assuming isn’t a good sign…). Could be (just guessing) that offers have been extended and now they need to wait to get “yes/no” from the first round. Because they’re building a group of about 20 students - if someone says “No” a slot would open up. I was hoping we’d hear one way or another since we’re headed to NOLA today for Destination Tulane. However - we’ll just continue to be patient…
I think you are right, @VAmomof4. Is it 20 in Altman per class now? I thought it was 15.
