The FAFSA DRT is still not working for my son. I called my sons's school today to find out what he should do as the FA deadline is tomorrow. The people in the FA told me that the IRS has indicated to them that the DRT should be available by the end of May. When I called the IRS, they said the end of April or beginning of May. So, the moral of the story is that if your child is a first time filer, make sure that s/he DOES NOT owe any money when filing his/her tax return. My son is probably going to get his FA letter about the same time that his payment is due.

Glad that it was my D’s second tax return this year. Also, we file it on 1/31.

My son filed on 2/10 and the payment was taken out on 2/12. Three months later, he is still waiting for the DRT to work for him.

Yes, same thing for us. Son is also a first time filer who owed taxes on scholarship/grants and we can’t use the DRT or order a tax transcript. I called at one point and was told that they use 2012 tax return to verify identity so since he never filed before, his “information does not match” IRS records and there isn’t anything to do about it but wait. Every few days, I check and then his account becomes “locked” but thankfully, we were not selected for verification this year and his college only “strongly” suggests we use the DRT so we are ok, I think. Oh, the IRS processed the payment within a day.

I’m surprised not to see more threads about this here on CC.

Our situation is almost identical to everyone else. Son is a first time filer who also owed taxes on scholarship/grants and the tax payment was made immediately. And, like the rest of you, we haven’t been able to use the DRT or order a tax transcript. But I would like to thank all of you for the additional information as to why the delays by IRS – it was not only helpful but I’m now less worried. Our son was actually selected for verification this year by his school but they just wanted the DRT used for the parent’s tax return which fortunately we were able to do. They haven’t asked for verification for our son but when we originally submitted the FAFSA we didn’t know that he was going to need to file this year. So, guess we’ll have to wait and see if the university is going to want his info verified as well, and if they do, hopefully the information will be available by then.

Shortly after this post, we checked the IRS transcript site and the tax transcript was finally available. Yea!!

Same here. My sons’s DRT finally worked. Now, we just have to wait for his FA letter.
