UPDATE on POP SINGING DAUGHTER

Hi All,

I havent posted here in a long time and it was so nice to get private emails recently from several people asking me for an update on my daughters career. She is a senior now and they remembered! So I thought I would stop by and give you an overview. I am posting it here as this is where I posted the most before.

Things have been very busy for her since I posted last. Alot has happened ranging from her being featured in a book on Myspace because of all her song plays (over 160,000) to offers for gigs and tours including a 5 year contract for Las Vegas (we turned it down). She won a nice CA award for Pop Female singer/songwriter of 2006, had her portrait painted by one of the Supremes and one of her songs is featured in an Indie film. She has also been asked to act in two movies. In November we flew to LA for several meetings including one with a major label and were shocked by what they wanted. She opted to go the Indie route for now. She will be flying to Nashville to record her pop CD this summer. To keep her options open she applied to 2 colleges and was accepted at both.

If you want more details just post here and I will PM you a link to her sites so you can hear her sing and learn more about what she has been doing.

I also want to thank you all for the information we have learned here! It was very helpful when we selected the two colleges she applied to.

So nice to get an update, angstridden. Congratulate your daughter for all of us. Will she be going to college, or is that still up in the air? I am sure I am also not the only inquisitive person who wants to know what the major label wanted that was shocking. If you are willing to share, it might be informative for other people out there going this route. Again, congrats to your D!

Angstridden, I have also been wondering about your D and glad to hear an update. Sounds like she is doing some great things and being recognized. I recall suggesting colleges to you over a long period of time. Where did she end up applying?

Will she go to college or continue to pursue work?

Congrats on all your D. success! What movie is her song in? Again congrats, her hard work seems to be paying off!

Thanks for sharing! It's exciting to see the different avenues these kids can take. We can't wait until she's really famous!!! Please remember our small community and keep us updated!

Thanks all for your nice posts here and your private ones!

Her CD will not be out till later in the year so at this point we are gearing towards college. We are just not sure if she will be able to balance it all. Right now she gets home from high school (where she takes only music classes) around 10:30, takes 1 class a week at the college and one online. So she has time to work on her career.

She has a lot of things she is working on. Recently she was asked by a film company to do a music video. She is also always trying to promote herself and a boutique line of clothing sent her a huge box of cute clothes in exchange for her wearing them. She has a new band that her booking agent put together for her. And there are many other things.

Susan, your advice on which colleges was excellent. We checked out tons of schools and in the end came back to the 3 you mentioned and she applied to 1 of them and she also applied to another college which has pop but more of a jazz orientation. She did get into both, but has not decided yet. She still hasnt ruled out going to Musicians Institute in CA or even moving there and taking courses at LACC. We plan to visit the schools soon so hopefully she will get a better feel for what she wants.
In other words its all up in the air.

Thanks so much again for the awesome support and advice from these boards!

Congrats to your daughter!!!! I'd love to hear her again! Best of luck with her college decisions - it's going to be a tough few weeks around here trying to make a decision.

I tried to send you a link but it said your mail box was full....so PM me and I will send you one.

She just released 2 songs within the past couple weeks and they are on her Myspace.

For her CD she is going in a less pop/rock and more of a pop/dance direction.

angstridden -- hey, great to hear this! I am one of those who was wondering how things were going for your daughter. Wow, sounds like she has been busy. So exciting! PM me with the links when you get a chance-- I would love to hear her songs!

Excellent news!
Please PM me with links.

Just wanted to let you all know she made her college decision. It was tough..one of the schools was like a resort, the other very much a city.
Both gorgeous in different ways...
She opted for the city one where she can easily get to gigs and its more "pop" oriented. Its more "active" in terms of performing..less focus is on math, English etc. She is an excellent student but she really wants to focus on her music. Most of the teachers are active musicians and able to really share life experience on the road. One of them handed out a few of her business cards and she has already been contacted by two musicians there regarding being in bands. So she will have her band at home and there also.

Meantime she will be flying to Nashville to record an EP the day after she graduates. And she has a lot of other projects planned for the summer including gigs and a music video.

So it will be an interesting year!

Angstridden, thanks for the update. Out of curiousity after a lot of posts regarding her only wanting a college in NY or LA for a long while, and trying to advise you over the years regarding that issue, did she end up picking a school in either of those two cities? No need to name the school.

I've always felt that Berklee would be such a good fit for your D even though she was so insistant on going to college in NYC or LA.

Good luck to her in her projects, pursuits and school next year!

angst, we are all happy to hear that your D has selected a college and is moving forward with her career plans. That's terrific! Why not post her college decision in the "final decisions" category? We all enjoy celebrating the successes of our kids! :)

Hi all,

We visted LA in November where she met with a major label. The meeting was eye opening. It changed our approach to the industry! They wanted so much, we opted right now for the Indie route. We also got a good look at LA and she visited New York. She loves the cities. I think LA is where she feels she belongs. But after looking at the colleges we did not find a curriculum that was right for her. And we were concerned that majoring in
something else would take her away from her true focus. The way the music industry is going, you no longer have to live in one of these cities. Logistically its easier for her to even live at home and fly there as needed.

We narrowed our search to 2 colleges and one was just right. Lots of opportunities for gigs, great program etc. Nice size city!
She may only stay there a year ..and then move on. We will see what happens.

Meantime she is singing at graduation, which is in a couple weeks. She also put a video of herself in her latest musical on her Myspace so PM me for a link if you want it. And the day after graduation we are flying to Nashville to record her pop CD, so lots going on!

I'm glad to hear your D came around to the idea of going to college in another city and still being able to pursue her field. During college, she need not be in NYC or LA. She might eventually go there, but it isn't necessary in terms of getting started. Gigs have to start somewhere, too.

As I mentioned to you in the past, a young woman from our town who went to school with my girls is making it big in the music industry with records, a label signing, major tours along with major names, and so forth. She is based right here in our rural town (though is on the road a lot due to major gigs across the country).

I have sent a link to everyone that PM'd me..if you didnt get one.. Please pm again or list that you want one here!

We just put the video of her latest musical on Myspace yesterday. Pop is her focus but she loves MT!
