*updated* Chance a home schooled rising senior!

I posted another Chance thread a while back, but I've since changed many of the schools I'm looking at/targeting with the hope of a) being more realistic in matches/reaches and b) finding schools that will accept my dual enrollment credit. I also added more information and tried to clear up the format. :-)

I'm looking at UF, FSU, Stony Brook, Boston University, American, UNC-Chapel Hill, UMD-College Park, and Tulane. I know Chapel Hill is probably a high reach, but I'm hoping that two or three of these on my list hit as matches. FIU is my ultimate safety as they're forced to accept me (which turns me off, to be honest), but I really want to leave home.

I'm a white female and my family's current income bracket is above $100,000. That's very likely changing for the worse within the next few months, but unfortunately it seems that this year's salary is what we'll be putting on the FAFSA

I'm home schooled, but I will also earn my AA through dual-enrollment at a CC concurrently with my high school graduation next year.

Course load:

9th grade:
Algebra I
Biology (with a once-a-week homeschool class supplement that was taught by a local conservation site)
US History
Language Arts (no title yet -- involved a grade 11 grammar book, an online SAT essay prep class, and an online short-story literary analysis class)
P.E.

10th grade:
Algebra II (with unit on Informal Geometry)
English Composition I (dual-enrolled)
Literature
Psychology (dual-enrolled)
American Government (dual-enrolled)
Sociology (dual-enrolled, summer term)
(I also completed my Biology book, but I'm wary of listing Biology twice)

11th grade:
English Composition II (dual-enrolled)
Philosophy (dual-enrolled)
World History
Pre-Calculus (dual-enrolled, passed out of College Algebra)
Speech Communication (dual-enrolled)
The Social Environment (dual-enrolled, summer term, an overview of all social science disciplines)
Critical Thinking/Ethics (dual-enrolled, summer term)

12th: (projected)
Chemistry (dual-enrolled w/lab)
Spanish I (dual-enrolled)
Economics (dual-enrolled, macro)
Intro to Microcomputer Usage (dual-enrolled)
Botany (dual-enrolled w/lab)
Spanish II (dual-enrolled)
Statistics (dual-enrolled)
State and Local Government (dual-enrolled)
Physics

GPA/Test Scores:

3.95 UW. If I weight the D. E. out of 5.00, as most Florida public universities appear to do, my weighted GPA is 4.75. I should also note that my GPA at the college is 4.00 (so far).

SAT: 2160 -- 600 M, 760 CR, 800 W. I'm taking it again in Oct. with the hopes of improving my math -- I'd like it around 700.

Subject Tests: Taking Literature this Saturday and expecting 700 or higher. In November I'll be taking Biology (haven't decided E or M yet) and US History.

Extracurriculars:

4 years of both voice (private) and tap dancing lessons.

I've worked backstage for the dance studio's musical theater showcases every year for the past 3 years, paid.

9 years total of private piano lessons, 3 in high school.

4 years of heavy involvement in a local childrens theater -- they perform 4-5 shows a year, and I am involved with all of them, either as a stage manager (hoping this counts as leadership as I'm leader of a tech crew of my peers as well as considerable authority over the cast members) or a performer.

Although I'm not involved with a troupe, I volunteer with Girl Scouts (my sisters are in it).

Public Relations officer and charter member of National Homeschool Honor Society (it began this year and I'll be continuing through 12th grade).

I'll also probably get a job this summer -- likely with Publix or somewhere similar.

Awards:

National Junior Theater Festival's "Outstanding Achievement in Acting" group award.

I also have several performance awards from within the children's theater, as well as one titled "Circle of Excellence."

Essays/Recs:

I'm pretty confident that my essays will be good. Writing is my strength, and I think I have some good experiences within theater to draw from and illustrate how I've hit obstacles and overcome them.

My recs are very good -- I have one from this year's Pre-calculus professor and from this year's English Comp II professor -- but the downside is that, as the only academic teachers I have outside of my parents are from the college, every professor I've had has only taught me for a semester. If necessary, I can also get recs from the directors of the theater which I know will be great as well.

I think that's it! Thanks to all who have something to say. :-)

Bump. Forgot to mention I’m a Florida resident

Anyone?? To add a little more info, I’m a legacy at FSU – my dad got his bachelor’s there.

Unfortunately I don’t know much about the schools you’re thinking about, but it sounds like you would be very competitive at most schools. You’re a great student.

I came in here to tell you that if your income changes significantly after you file your FAFSA, you should definitely contact financial aid at whatever college you end up attending and let them know. They can change your financial aid package if you can prove that your financial status has changed since filing last year’s taxes.

Thank you! It does make sense, hopefully most colleges would take that kind of a change into account.

Bumpity-bump. :-)

You have a great resume, maybe just the SAT is a bit low, why are you not looking at big name colleges?

Thanks! I’m definitely going to work on getting that 600 up over the summer. The main reason for choosing the colleges I did is that they accept my dual enrollment credits. I really want the three years of work I’ll have put in by next year to count, and they’d also help a lot with the finances because these classes were free. Out of curiosity, though, excepting the DE credits, which schools do you think would be a good fit?

I see you getting a 2300 SAT superscored, just bump the math up, and im sure you will get an 800 CR eventually, so 800+800+700=2300

I am going to be applying to Ivy League colleges because they accept my A Level credits. You always give those schools a shot, especially Princeton.

@Whartonlite: Haha, yeah, that’s what I’m hoping for too. Though it looks like I’ll have to be studying the math myself…we’re having a hard time finding a one on one tutor. It all seems to be groups (which I’m worried will focus on bringing say, 400s up) that focus on both reading and math – I don’t really feel like putting time and money in the CR section, obviously.

@Ppayaas: Good luck to you! I’d probably apply to Columbia and Georgetown if it weren’t for the college credit issue.
