Any of you guys know about these schools?

What other schools would you recommend?

My son had a friend who went to Dayton, and liked it a lot. A lot of kids from our high school go to Duquesne. It’s a very pretty school, and you might have a good chance there based on being OOS, URM, your test scores and the trend in your grades. I don’t know much about the other schools. You might take a look at both Kent State and Toledo in Ohio if you’re looking at Dayton. (I really liked U-Toledo when we visited. I haven’t talked any of my own kids into going there though.). You’d get $ from both of those schools. Whether they might work for you would depend of course on your major. Also – take a look at Penn State satellite campuses (two years and you’re guaranteed Penn State at State College). You might also have a shot at Temple.

Good luck!

One more note: the foreign language prereq may be your biggest hurdle. Many colleges require at least two or three years of a language. Shame on your guidance counselor for not raising this with you!!! Check out the requirements for admission at every one of these schools to see if you meet that requirement.

If not, make sure that you’re taking a foreign language your senior year. If a school needs three years of a foreign language, check if the schools might accept a foreign language class taken the summer before you attend.

If finances are a concern, Duquesne is likely to be quite expensive. You did take a year of foreign language in 8th grade, right? That actually should have given you high school credit and should be reflected as a high school course on your transcript. If it isn’t you may not be on track to graduate! Check with your GC. Most colleges do require more than one credit of foreign language.

Btw, your Regents list is missing Math A which is another graduation requirement!

I’d consider adding Drew University, which is located in Madison, NJ on a commuter line to NYC. It may be a little bit of a stretch for you (I think they’re median GPA is around 3.3-3.4). But Drew is demonstrably committed to diversity and is also fairly generous with merit aid. Good luck!

Drew and Temple are good suggestions–good luck–you have a lot of nondiverse parents rooting for you!
