For schools outside of the Commonapp it's common to have an update/midyear report that notifies them of semester grades as well as any achievements the student has earned in the past months that wouldn't've made the initial application.

A few questions on this:
1) What about the CommonApp Midyear report? I doubt my counselor knows some recent achievements.

2a) If so/I've earned achievements after the midyear report, how would I go about notifying colleges of this, and would they even matter at this point?

2b) Should I e-mail admissions officers with updates as I gain [non-trivial] achievements past Feburary? For example if one qualified for ISEF through science fair senior year in Feburary/March, I feel that would make a notable difference...

Mid year report is just updated grades. There is a field for counselors to report any change in your behavior around school (or something like that, i forget the exact prompt), but it will not include your achievements. You can send significant updates just to the admission office. They will attach the updates to your profile, or give you instructions for doing so. Definitely don’t send multiple update emails “as you gain achievements.” Consolidate one list of updates.

Some schools may have already made decisions, others may not have looked at your application. No way of really knowing. Always good to just send em,

Of course consolidated would be better, but how would I know if I’m going to accomplish things until I do them - I have several events coming up and there’s no way I’ll know.

Say I send one right now. I could qualify for AIME on Wednesday. In March USABO semis come out, state science fair, etc.

Well, you don’t know when your application is going to be reviewed, so you need to send them as early as possible. Once mid year reports roll in, they reviewing gets serious- adcoms aren’t just sitting around snoozing and waiting for a few more weeks to make decisions. If you have a few racked up, send them now. If you get something really significant later, might as well send it separately, but it might not even be considered.

In your first update, you may wish to include that you are competing in USABO and the state science fair. Keep in mind that no applicant will have awards or achievements from these things for 2011. You will be on a level playing field.
