Siblings get a boost in Penn admissions

Siblings officially don’t count as legacy at Penn, but I read that article and it sounds like if your sibling is currently at the school it might give you a bit of an edge. Good luck!!
Question: when Upenn superscores for the new SAT, do they superscore only Critidal reading and math (2 scores) or do they superscore the reading, writing, and math sections (3 sections)?
Would anyone be willing to look at my EC to see how well I have a chance to get in?
I really enjoyed visiting the campus. I liked the inner city vibe, yet everything was neat and clean. Very beautiful too. I’m just worried: how stressful is it? I know it’s an ivy league and all but are students super competitive there? Or even better, what’s the students there like? Sociable? Nerdy? Independent? I still plan on applying to ED and I just want to know what it’s like within students.
@ballofstress123 I visited in March during spring break, and the students seemed fairly relaxed. It was a nice day out and there were tons of students studying together on the green or walking around. I got the feeling that, for an Ivy League, it didn’t seem all too competitive. Of course, someone who’s currently attending could probably give you a better viewpoint, but that’s just the vibe I picked up.
@ballofstress123 I attended the Leadership in the Business World (LBW) program at Wharton last summer and I got a little feel of interacting with Penn and Wharton students. The reality is, there are a lot Penn and Wharton students are from pretty affluent, NY/Greenwich backgrounds. Plus, the greek life at Penn is also really prominent. About competition, I think at Wharton students are quite competitive, because a lot of them are aiming for the same positions in consulting and business. However in the liberal arts school, there is more diversity of interest, so there shouldn’t be as much.
I see Penn students as: affluent, fratty, independent, sociable. They are nice kids for sure, but a lot of them just come from quite privileged backgrounds.
@Klayyy I think with regards to standardized testing, there is a minimum threshold that you must pass in order to be considered. I think once you are in that range, a higher test score doesn’t change much about your appeal. I say this because I have seen many students from my school get in with scores ranging from 2100 to 2400 (on SAT).
I think the threshold for standardized testing also depends on what background/school you come from. If you come from a wealthy private school, the university admissions committee might hold you to higher standards than the student from a less affluent public school.
With standardized testing, I wouldn’t worry as much. Good news for you is you got a 2310! That’s absolutely fire and you are definitely within the range. Also, the universities view them as less and less important each year. Your score has put put you above the threshold no matter what background you are from.
On the topic of testing…
Sending subject tests are “optional” but “recommended”. It says on the website that you will not be at a disadvantage if you don’t take the subject tests…I know they don’t use score choice, so if you take the subject tests you MUST send them (I confirmed this with admissions). However, do you think an ED applicant that decides not to take subject tests until after the ED date is asking for trouble? So the ED application would only have regular SAT scores (2 of them)? Same student is AP scholar with distinction, if that matters at all.
And if you do take subject tests, do you think they all need to be above a 750 or they will hurt you? I have heard that rumor, but not sure…
My daughter is trying to decide what to do. Not sure she can get the high scores on Subject tests in October but might be ready in December. If not having these tests will truly not disadvantage her, not sure she should go crazy trying to take the tests in October.
Thanks!
@collegemomjam Can’t answer all your questions but Penn DOES use score choice now (new this year), so you no longer have to send all scores. She could take an earlier test and if she isn’t happy with the scores then she can decide to not send them. I’d trust the school when it says it won’t put her at a disadvantage.
Hey guys! Do you think there is a significantly greater chance to get into UPenn if you apply ED rather than RD? (Comp sci)
I think when you back out the legacies and athletes, it’s probably not that significant of a difference, but still probably slightly easier.
I’m planning on applying ED to CAS. Can I still apply to other schools, like Temple and Northeastern, EA? Also what if I get accepted but the financial aid package isn’t enough and we can’t afford it?
@Tedeward UPenn has a restrictive ED policy. If you’re applying ED to Penn, you can only apply EA to public schools, foreign schools, and schools with non-binding early deadlines for scholarships.Definitely no REA. Northeastern is private so you can’t apply EA there, but Temple is public so applying EA there is fine as long as it is non-binding.
As for your financial aid question, I’d assume you’d be able to decline the acceptance. I am not entirely sure.
Hi everyone! Planning to ED to NHCM and School of Nursing. Loved Upenn on my campus visit, and is definitely my dream college
Hey y’all, does anyone think it’s worth it to apply ED for CAS? My stats are up to or above par and my EC’s are solid, I could definitely write a great essay… Should I apply ED or save it for a more cutthroat school like Dartmouth?
Hey everyone, can someone tell me how Penn admissions look at an upward trend? Freshman: 3.61 (i got 1 B) Soph: 3.9 Junior 4.0. Overall 3.84…I can get it up to a 3.88 this year (provided they let me send in 1st term grades) Of course, the rigor increased every year. I have great ACT (35) /SAT II scores. Pretty good EC’s and Essays.
@collegemomjam If I’ve taken three subject tests, would it be possible to send scores from only one of them?
Can someone send the link to the source that says you no longer have to send all scores to Penn?
