UPenn ED Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

@BehindYou You don’t need a Penn Card to apply for financial aid- I think they give you an option of just putting your email address and birthday on that financial aid form instead of using the Card.

I need advice! How bad would it look if I didn’t have a subject test on my application for ED Wharton? I know it’s only recommended but I want everyone’s opinion! I signed up for the Nov SAT II for Math 2 but I don’t think I’ll do well on it and I do have to send the score directly to UPenn so it’s a huge risk!

@misstalksalot99 Wharton really likes to see SAT II for Math 2, and AP calculus BC as well. You need to demonstrate that you are strong on math.

does anyone know the normal # of wharton ED applicants?

@pephen104 Penn does not publish these figures.

No they don’t

If the highest level offered is non-AP or Calc AB, then that is fine.

lol when everyone is positive and then skieurope comes in… hahaha

There is a difference between “Like” and “require”.

According to some applicants last year, Wharton called their schools and asked why students are taking Calc AB and not BC. A lot of Wharton courses are data driven. They like students with strong math.

Of course they like applicants with strong math. However, to my earlier point, if a HS does not offer BC, there is no expectation that a student have BC. They can’t take what is not offered.

Regardless, not all accepted students will have had BC (or AB) in HS. If they did, there would not be so many sections of Math 104/110.

@skieurope , so do I need to worry that my daughter is taking Honors Calculus as a Junior instead of AP Calc because that is where she felt comfortable? She has been accelerated in math since middle school, so she can still take AP Statistics or some other math next year. However, she would be applying to Arts and Sciences, not Wharton or Engineering. What’s your opinion?

Anyone else have issues with only teacher recs showing up on applicant portal? I also submitted a counselor and additional rec that common app said were completed, but only the teacher ones show as submitted on the applicant portal.

Any tips for the interview , I have mine on Tuesday?

is 800M 710 English good enough for wharon?

@xoxo27 This happened to me too…called and they said wait it out until the end of this week. If its still not received, then contact them again. If anything, office of undergrad admissions will reach out to you if they start reviewing your application and find a major piece missing, and your part is done as long as you’ve submitted, processing is on them.

@Finapp Congrats on getting your interview so early-lucky you!! Get there early and make sure to stay hydrated and just know your answer for basic interview questions like “Why UPenn” & “How do you think you’ll be an asset to the school”. Your SAT scores are great- I think 1500 is the average so you’re good! Also you have a perfect Math which is super awesome! Good luck to you!

Hi, just a quick question. I just applied to Penn ED under the LSM (CAS + Wharton) program. I believe I have a good chance (though not highly likely) of acceptance into CAS only, but last year one of my classmates committed to Wharton as an ATHLETE. Because he is in the same graduating class as me, does this lower my chances for LSM? For CAS?

@Yakisoba I don’t think it should hurt your chances of getting into UPenn in general as long as you’re a good student! However if they have many equally qualified candidates just like you, admissions may choose to go with another candidate from a different school for diversity purposes. It’s always good to apply though- you still have a good shot & anything can happen!

@Winky1 If she is applying to CAS then it should be fine. Ivies do like to see that you’ve taken Calculus, but if she’s not going to major in a math-focused area the difference between honors calc and AP calc is minimal.

@fhbf11 It takes a little while for things to sync between the common app and the Penn applicant portal. Be patient. If it doesn’t show up after a week or so then I suggest calling the admissions office.

@masquerade98, thanks. I will definitely encourage her in the AP direction, as I do think that is what is best for her to be competitive.
