My S was accepted ED to UPenn/Wharton and we received the initial financial aid offer using 2009 tax return. Due to contract issues at my work we received income in our Dec 2010 pay that was given in a lump sum that covered 2 years. Over all my agi was about $5000 more than the previous year. UPenn also considered my S dad's income even though he doesn't have anything to do with him...no sustainable relationship and not willing to help with college. I filed the request for reevaluation and S dad is supposed to submit his taxs/income. My request was that only my income and child suport received be used to determine aid. Also, I'm waiting on a letter from my cardiologist stating my current condition and why I can only work 1 job...I have severe heart failure.

They offered a very generous package, but I am still a bit worried.

Anyone have insight? Suggestions? Is there anything else I can do?

You will just have to wait and see what Penn decides. They do require non-custodial parent income/asset information from applicants for financial aid. It will be up to them to determine whether they will exempt your child from this requirement. I hope you have compelling evidence of the lack of contact as “not being willing to contribute” usually doesn’t matter.

What do you mean by this? Are you saying that ALL of your compensation for the next TWO years was paid to you in December 2010? If so, again, you will need to provide sufficient evidence to Penn that this is the WHOLE of your income and that no other compenstation is heading your way for the upcoming year.

I’m sorry to hear about your cardiac condition. Most schools don’t expect parents to work more than ONE job. I hope the one job you have is sufficient to meet your expenses. If you have significant unpaid (by insurance) medical expenses in 2010, you might want to send that info to Penn also.

Hopefully the very generous aid Penn gave your son will enable him to attend.

Thanks for the input…I’m a teacher and we worked for 2 years without a new contract. When the arbitrator was complete the back pay was issued in a lump sum in December. I was hoping it was going to to be issued in 2011 but that wasn’t the case.

My S dad has another family and he is the primary bread winner for a family of 5.

My S has worked his tail off for the last 4 years and I will do whatever is necessary to make sure he has opportunities he has earned.

This may sound “rough” but since that was back pay you received, is it possible to dedicate some of that to your son’s college costs? Also keep in mind that if the money had been awarded in 2011, it would affect your child’s aid NEXT year.
