Thanks :)

wow, two schools I plan to apply for…I’m still a sophomore, but I would recommend columbia.

Hmm any particular reasons why?

its overall better in terms of academics. Upenn is usually considered one of the lower Ivy leagues.

I envy you.

@collegebound9528 Hmm yeah that’s definitely what I’ve heard my entire life. Do you know anything about like student life / community ?

@thestorm did you apply for transfer this year? you can still apply to enter as a junior !!!

idk, like i said, I’m a sophomore in high school. I know people that have gone to both schools, and they all have positive reviews for both schools. You might like Columbia because it’s by New York, which will have a large diversity of people. UPenn is nearby Philadelphia too.

I did apply as a transfer and I got shot down. I just don’t have what it takes, and I certainly don’t think I can go through the process again. Major, major congrats to you. To get into these schools as a transfer you are among an incredibly select few.

According to this, UCLA is ranked higher than Upenn or columbia [Times Higher Education World University Rankings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Times Higher Education World University Rankings - Wikipedia)

^ You do know for undergraduates those rankings are totally meaningless right…

I wouldn’t care if I chose a school ranked 200 on that over a school ranked 5. Their methodology makes it irrelevant for a person choosing an undergraduate school.

It’s good to hear there have been positive reviews for both schools! I never know if it’s just mostly the people who have something to complain about who make themselves heard D:

Hmm I have to admit I do consider these schools because they’re typically highly ranked… what would be a more reliable source D: ?

@thestorm - Thanks for the kind words! Just want to say that I wasn’t admitted out of high school, so trying again really turned things around. Nonetheless, I know people who are at Stern and loving it!! Good luck!! : )

I think you should worry less about the rankings because they both have the same prestige. It really depends on what you want to study and what atmosphere you’re looking for. I got into both schools for freshman admittance, but I had to end up going to my state school because of financial reasons and I got a full ride.

@Pinoiako916, what does UCLA’s ranking have to do with UPenn or columbia?

ahhh i also have to choose between upenn and columbia!! honestly though, i love nyc and columbia has been a top choice of mine for a while, so i’m definitely leaning towards columbia. it really does depend on what you want to study. wait so you applied to the engineering school at upenn but not at columbia?

I am in the exact same predicament (although CAS at Penn)! I think I might be leaning towards Columbia, but the Core is something that we should all really be looking into in terms of how it’ll affect our 6 (4?) semesters at the school. If I can’t do what I want academically at Columbia, I’ll be choosing Penn.

that UCLA is as good or even slightly better than UPenn or columbia

They are equally good schools, there is no prestige difference. It really comes down to fit. Where do you see yourself socially?

The only thing about the CORE at Columbia is that it takes up a lot of space in your schedule. Because of the CORE, my friend who is a freshman now is flipping out because he doesn’t think he will graduate on time, even though he came in with over 18 AP credits. He’s doing a science major, but for instance, for Bio majors, you can’t use your AP credits for Bio 1 and 2. You have to take a special Columbia course for the introductory bio requirements.

Thanks for all the feedback!!

Yeah I applied to computational biology at Penn. At Columbia they dont really have this in SEAS but have information health science (kind of similar) in CC (it’s a specialized stream of CS). I actually am very interested in the core, but I don’t want to have to be stressing about taking specific things just to graduate… I would still like some flexibility :S

I’ve just always loved NYC. I’ve been on campus and still loved it. I’ve heard that because of the city though, campus life lacks any sort of spirit/unity. Any comments?? Apparently it lacks the “Ivy” feel? I was there for only a day, so honestly it’s hard for me to say ):

General comments on the differences in the social life at both schools? These things are so hard to gauge from publications and stuff like that ):

I’m entering as a sophomore so I still have 3 years left.
@chelseafan123 your friend who entered as a FRESHMAN is concerned about finishing the core??
