UPenn RD Class of 2022 Discussion

Not sure if this was said, but was told by Dean Furda in February that they will release decisions March 27 (not 28)

@swanfactor In person? No way

@swanfactor I got deferred and in the letter they clearly state the 28th.

All Ivies are required to release RD decisions the same day. So it will be the 28th.

Regardless of what anyone said and what their job title is, the date is not official until all 8 schools agree on the date and it’s published.

@MaybeHarvard2022 is correct. They must release on the same date, but not necessarily at the same time.

Hey guys! I have a question regarding AP Credit at UPenn. So, I signed up to take the AP Macro and AP Micro exams, but because of Penn’s credit policies I’m unsure about taking them. UPenn’s website states that a score of 5 will get you an Econ 001 waiver for Micro and Econ 002 waiver for Macro. I applied to Wharton, so I checked their page and they say that you can fulfill the Econ 010 requirement if you get 5s on BOTH exams. So basically what I’m asking is: 1) What’s a waiver and how does it differ from class credit? 2) Is it even worth taking them if a have to get 5s on both to even fulfill a requirement at Wharton and because I plan to be a Business Economics and Public Policy (an econ) major, so wouldn’t it be better for me to take the introductory class anyways?

Does Penn have a different policy on ED acceptances compared to other schools? Student at my son’s school was accepted Penn ED, and did not withdraw other applications. She just got Regents scholarship at Berkeley. Shouldn’t she have had to commit by now officially??? Money is not a problem.

@divarose if she didn’t have an issue with financial aid, she should have withdraw all other applications.

@MaybeHarvard2022 that is what I thought. Makes me sad because she is taking spots that might go to other students apparently for no good reason. Sigh.

@divarose – your sadness is misplaced. The admissions process is a very well oiled machine, and Penn knows that some applicants will renege on their commitments and builds that into its decisions, so nobody’s spot is being taken by your son’s friend. On the other hand, future students at your son’s school who apply ED to Penn will be negatively impacted by the school’s inability to enforce a commitment entered into by the applicant, her parents and counseling staff at the school, since that’s really the only enforcement mechanism available to Penn. So assuming she goes to Berkley, you should be sad for future students at your son’s school who will not be admitted to Penn ED when they might otherwise have been!

how much value/emphasis does Penn place on applicants having research experience in high school? would not having it mean that you have no chance? does having experience give you a big boost? (for premed)

@ashley676 I have it and hopefully will find out on 27th whether it made a difference. I started researching back in 10th grade. One university I applied to, has a special research scholarship set up for those with research on their resumes and apps. A few I know of have gotten interviews for it and they have no research on their resume, app etc. I didn’t get such an opportunity with them for interview for that scholarship. Go figure. It depends. However, Penn stresses research in certain areas of study at their school as preferred but who knows how that washes out.

@JayZee21 You mean the 28th. Ivy day is the 28th.

@MrElonMusk If you go to #325, see the SuperModerator’s comment. Looks like it may be 27th. Again, who knows? All this stuff changes like the wind. lol

You do not get credit, but do not need to take the classes. You can go straight into classes that have Econ 1/2 as a prereq.

Your choice. IMO, intro econ is intro econ, so if you can place out of it it, I would. If you don’t think you can score 5’s, then it’s fine to save the money and take the classes at Penn. But if you’re borderline, strive for the 5.

@skieurope what is ur opion about post #331? thanks for all ur advice. Its very helpful and highly valued.

@JayZee21 the super moderator @skieurope only quotes the phrase “Not sure if this was said, but was told by Dean Furda in February that they will release decisions March 27 (not 28)” and then says:

“Regardless of what anyone said and what their job title is, the date is not official until all 8 schools agree on the date and it’s published.”

Harvard has announced that they will release decisions on the 28th. http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2018/2/14/applications-numbers-2018/

correct! u r correct!

IMO, an EC is an EC. One should choose EC’s that one enjoys, not with an eye of what will “impress” admissions.

@MrElonMusk rooting for everyone to get in!
