"Upscale dress?"

DS is in the process of registering with casting agencies in a major metro area. He needs to appear in person for an orientation for one of them. They will photograph him and the instruction is "upscale dress." I am assuming that this doesn't mean he should appear in a suit, but rather that he shouldn't be dressed in jeans and a ratty t-shirt. Could someone with experience please comment? Thanks!

I’d interpret ‘upscale’ dress as classy. Not a suit, but clean pressed button down shirt, tie (which he can take off if necessary), pressed pants, nice dress shoes, also clean. Remember socks. Lots of guys forget about that – should be neutral dress socks. As for color, pants can be navy or khaki or black, shirt and tie something that looks good on him.

He could clear his outfit with the casting agency beforehand. Usually there’s nothing wrong with emailing a brief question about how they’d like him to appear.

If it’s not too difficult, he can also bring a couple of outfits so they can photograph him with different upscale looks.

Finally, he should make sure his hair is neat and groomed since they say ‘upscale.’

I would think of it as what might S wear to a college audition…

I think your son should keep in mind his type when coming up with upscale dress. If he is a hipster they where skinny fitting pants and thin ties. A preppy guy would wear would JCrew dress cloths. Also you mentioned this is for a major market. I assume it is for background work since you mentioned he is singing up with casting agencies. He should take a look at the TV shows and films that shoot there and look to see what background actors are wearing. The more he makes casting see how they could cast him the more likely he will book. He could also bring glasses and put them on and take them off if they are taking more then one photo of him.

Appreciate the helpfiul responses! Yes, this is mainly for background work, although at least one of these agencies may offer other possibilities, too. He had excellent professional headshots taken a couple of months ago ( with and without facial hair) but it seems that one major place in particular wants to take their own photo.

@connections, he was planning to dress as you suggested but hadn’t thought of a tie. I’ll mention that to him. I will also suggest emailing them for clarification.
@shacherry‌ thanks for really good ideas!
