Hi, all. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for what boys should wear for MT auditions? My S has been auditioning at colleges (not unifiieds) and has worn dress pants and dress shirt, sometimes with a tie and sometimes without. Yesterday at Pace, he seemed quite out of place as most of the boys were in jeans or other casual clothes. Is my S dressing too conservatively?

I think talent is the most important thing they look at, not clothes, but still - we'd love some advice to be sure he is putting his best foot forward on all fronts. Thanks!

I saw lots of jeans on boys at NY Unifieds, too, MomofaMTson, but thought it was too casual. I think chinos or dress pants and a nice shirt is fine. Maybe lose the tie, unless he really feels comfortable in it. I think the boys who wore nice shoes, nice pants, and a nice shirt looked perfect. But that’s just my opinion, and I’m just a mom…of a daughter. So I don’t know that it means anything!

My son has been auditioning in nice khakis (but not dress pants, skinny Gap/American Eagle kinds as he is very thin and they look best) with a pullover and either a button down (for crew neck) or white t-shirt (for v-necks). He also has worn very very very nice jeans… This was the “look” at NYC unifieds this weekend, and I thought the boys looked great. There were also a few who wore ties as well and they looked handsome as well. I think the bottom line is to wear something you feel comfortable in and is “you” but not ripped or messy looking.

The clothing choice should reflect who the person is… if your son is a rocker with jeans and converse type of guy, he should wear the version of that he would wear on a date. If your son is a classical, leading man type who finds himself more comfortable in dress pants and button downs than wear that!

A big mistake I’ve seen in my 5 years of running college MT auditions is students/ parents thinking there is some kind of audition uniform and not showing any personality in the outfit choices. It starts looking like a sea of khakis, dress pants, button downs and jersey dresses. Which ends up looking like a business school interview to me, not a musical theatre audition that is about seeing the individuality of the artists. Just some thoughts :)

Lululemon Men’s Studio pants. They are dressy with a nice shirt and you can dance in them. My son and his friends swear by them. (and they are pretty indestructable as well.)

There is nothing wrong with wearing jeans if you are comfortable in them. My son wore nice jeans and a button down shirt to all of his auditions so far and has been quite successful.

Saw exactly one boy in a suit today at Chicago Unifieds. He looked very nice. Guys seems to be able to get away with wearing just about anything.
