During my freshman and sophomore years of high school, I received a total of 6 B's. (I mean to say that these were dispersed fairly sporadically throughout the four semesters, and the rest of my grades were A's) Assuming that I will be infinitely more prepared & do exceptionally well this next year, do you think that colleges will take this into consideration...I mean, do they recognize when a student has an upward trend? (I know that I'm not exactly asking a forum of admissions officers, but I would like to get a few opinions on the matter. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!)

Yes. Colleges like to see an upward trend in the GPA. In fact, some schools don’t even consider your frosh grades (Princeton, for example).

Thanks for your input. Does anyone else have an opinion on the subject?

upward trend is obviously better than downward trend if you end up having the same GPA. But consistent good grades is still what they like to see most.

^ Yeah, but six B’s won’t DESTROY the OP’s chances.

I have the same problem. In my frosh year I did terrible and have a 3.2 UW GPA. I had an epiphany during the summer and ended my soph year with a 4.1 UW GPA (my school give A+'s, which count as a 4.3)

kiterunner: oh no I didn’t mean anything like that. I was just pointing out the fact that although they definitely do recognize an upward trend, the overall GPA is still going to be lower than someone who gets consistent A’s.

^ oh, ok, I gotcha. Makes sense.

What if my bad year was in sophomore year instead (3.66 weighted)? My freshman year is decent(4.0 weighted), i went all out junior year and got all A’s except one B+, including 3 AP classes (4.46 weighted), and this year I’m taking 5 AP classes and an honors class and looking at almost straight A’s (4.6-4.7 weighted). My SAT I is a 2270 and SAT 2’s are: Math I and Math 2: 800s, Bio E and M: 740s. I have other good parts to my app, but my question is how likely am I to make it past the first round of admissions at Dartmouth, Brown, etc? Can my standardized tests make up for my GPA? Because I really think that if I can do that my essays would have a good chance of putting me over the top.

By the way my school doesn’t rank but I’m in the top 10% which is as high as we go.
