Urban Exploration at UVA

Hi all,

I'm doing some research for a folklore paper on urban exploration traditions (roofing, steam tunneling, etc.) at UVA, and I'm hoping to talk to people who have experience with either. You would remain anonymous in the paper for legal reasons. If you're interested, feel free to PM me!

Roofing is kind of a sensitive subject since a student passed away within the last few years. Steam tunneling is still popular.

There’s an app that’s a checklist of 108 things every UVA student should do before they graduate. I often wonder what percentage of UVA students actually streak the lawn? Go steam tunneling? Paint Beta Bridge? Take a professor out to lunch? Etc.

Each class adds one more item to the list of “11X Things to do before you graduate.” This year’s class is 2013, so 113 items on the list, which was released in August. I couldn’t find a copy of it online. Here’s a copy of 111 (you may already have it, but it’s fun for those who haven’t seen it, esp our 2017 hopefuls-almost time!).

jc40, I’m afraid your dd is about to become intimately familiar with just how popular streaking the lawn is next year as a lawnie (pun intended  ). The tradition of the first snowfall STL made this a ‘one and done’ for a certain student I may or may not be contributing to financially.

Google, or hashtag on twitter, any number of the items on the list and you’ll find plenty of comments and pictures.

My understanding is that the U. really tightened rules about many of these activities after the death of a student who fell from the roof of the Physics Building (as mentioned above). I’ve also heard stories about the dangers from tunneling - including from burns and smacking your head while trying to run in the dark.

The biggest danger of streaking on the Lawn is that someone steals your clothes.

I’d stick to trying to find your way out of the mezzanine levels in the back of Alderman.

The biggest danger of streaking the Lawn is getting brought up on some kind of charges and never being able to work with children, hence why Curry students avoid the practice altogether.

I only made it maybe 1/3 of the way through my UVA checklist, but the things I did (and things not on the list) were some great experiences (took plenty of professors out to lunch!).
