i like Politics but i feel if you don’t attend law school it’s a total waste and law school the Return of investment is simply not there. Business administration i feel use to be a solid major when less people attended college seems every joe blow has a business degree. Urban planning is a niche field but feel there is potential would like to get opinions of others. Also what are the best online programs that offer these majors? I found Urban planning through ASU online would like some other options
You have a narrow understanding of the job market. Your major is not that dependent on your job or earnings potential. You can be an absolutely fantastic writer/analyst, communicator or show fantastic work ethic with a degree in Art History – and get great internships and job offers from a variety of companies.
Similarly, if you get a Urban Planning or Bus Admin major but don’t have decent skills or communication or work ethic, you’ll have very little to choose from.
I agree with @T26E4 -
Careers are not restricted by majors for the most part.
There are a few exceptions. I was at this one JP Morgan Recruiting event (for basically all their divisions, including investment banking, S&T, technology, etc.), and a girl who was a Dairy Science major from another school did not look like she was being considered too seriously by the recruiters. Also, for many engineering jobs, you will need the respective engineering degree.
^ This is true as well – the Dairy Science major should have known that for JPM, an Econ or BusAdmin degree would be more seriously considered (unless she somehow had some serious finance/banking internships/experience).
Yeah, you can be a political science major and go get an MBA or go into marketing or program management or something with your BA and make good money. Or you can major in business management and work for a nonprofit and make not-as-good money. Urban planning really depends; a lot of state and local governments don’t pay a lot, but some do and some urban/regional/city planners may work for private firms that contract with the government or that need to understand cities to do other work (for example, I don’t know if they actually do hire urban planners, but Uber would be a company that could maybe benefit from some).
