Urban Studies

I am a sophmore at a four-year college, and I am considering transferring to the University of Minnesota. The school I am at right now doesn't really have anything I want to major in.

If I were to transfer to the University of Minnesota, it would be starting Fall 2008 semester. I am not sure what I would major in, but it would most likely be Urban Studies, followed by Geography.

Does anyone have any details or insight about the Urban Studies Program that isn't obvious? I have looked at the Urban Studies website, looked at the course catalog online, and talked to some people in the Geography Department.

Things about Urban Studies that I have questions about are:

What is the advising like?

What is the difficulty of the major? How heavy is the courseload and workload?

What is the internship experience like? How much help does the Urban Studies program give students when looking for an internship? How flexible do the internships tend to be?

How hands on and in the community is the program?

Is it more common for people to get the B.A. or B.S. in Urban Studies? I would probably pursue a B.S. if I transferred, because of the absence of the foreign language requuirement?

How hard is it for Urban Studies majors to get courses they want and courses they need to graduate?

Thanks.

bjb, I am a current student, but I am not very familiar with the UrbStds/Geog programs. You may be wondering why no one is replying to your post.. It's not because the program isn't good, but the people who frequent these boards are not familiar with it. Sorry for the lack of helpful information. Good luck as you continue your journey towards transferring.

You may want to contact an admissions counselor or see if there are any people listed under the Urban Studies category on the U of M website. They will definitely be able to answer your questions much more thoroughly and probably much faster than any of us could.
