URGENT* (18 Days before SAT, Low Score)

Hello, this is quite an urgent thread, please put down whatever advice you can come up with!

My SAT Test date is 1/25/2014 and I'm currently scoring only 1720 on my mock SAT with

"Absolut 0 preparation"

however I am aiming for 2200s (***)

I'm quite a quick learner, once I gone from 235/350 school ranking, after I actually studied I've gone to 8/350. Sorry for all these extra information, just want to ask, is it impossible for me to go from 1720 to 2200, in 18 days? SHOULD I POSTPONE?

Thank you All!

Honestly I am not sure about 2200, but over 2000 should definitely be doable as long as you work really hard. I find the math section is the fastest to learn so start with that. Just do all past papers and practice tests you can find, so there’ll be no surprises on the test.

There’s a lot of great advice here on College Confidential on taking the SAT so just remember to spend some time here too, simply reading and taking in other peoples experiences.

I went from 1880 to 2080 with a month (of which perhaps two weeks were focused on the SAT) in between but that did require some serious studying. However, English is my first foreign language so your odds should be a bit better.

Good luck!

Is it impossible? No, but it’s not a great plan. You might as well take it when you’re ready. It’s great that you’re a quick study, but some of it really does require some practice and analysis. Keep in mind that lots and lots of really smart people take this test and actually do prepare. Get off CC, get going, and good luck! :-)

First of all, look at what you wrote and identify the grammar errors in this post. Second, buy the Blue Book, Princeton Review 11 Test Book, or even the College Board online course and do all the practice you can. Try doing 2-3 TIMED sections per day to get a good feel of time constraints and test material. This works a lot got a 1940 first try in November and I have now brought it up to a 2200-2300 range. Good Luck!

Honestly, if you’re as good as a learner as you claim to be, you should be able to get a score near the 2000s. Most people say that they score lower on the real SATs than on mock or PSATs. But just calm your nerves and concentrate on that day. Really though, here are my answers:

Since you’re either a freshman, sophomore, or junior (I’m betting on junior though), you have the ability to postpone.

Unless you plan to procrastinate again, which is what I assume you did, you should probably study up for the next SAT and skip this one.

If you do decide to do it (whichever one really), figure out which part you’re weakest in, and study up in that section. If it’s math, just go grab a practice SAT book and do every problem in there. You have 13 days (at the time that I’m writing this) so you should be able to tackle most of the skills that you have the most trouble with. If it’s CR, you might need to postpone because a lot of the vocab can’t be learned in just two weeks. You have to practice. Writing is probably the one that you need the most practice in, but if you scour the CC forum, you’ll see a lot of people have walkthroughs and outlines on how to write good 12 point essays. I used to write 8 point essays, but after reading through all of them, I scored a 12.

For my mock and PSATs, I got a 1890, but when the first SAT rolled around, I procrastinated and didn’t study, so I got a 1750. I skipped a few SATs and studied real hard and got a 2230.

As a random throw in, I didn’t study and got a 34 on the ACT, so you might want to try that next time. Though I don’t know what skills you’re better in.

Honestly though, I think that you should just postpone this one and study for the next SAT. I don’t think that throwing a late fee with the $50 is a good idea just to get a less than satisfactory score.

Just my 2 cents. Hope I helped.
