"Research (optional):
If you have written a research paper or report on a math, science, or engineering project, you are encouraged to submit a copy of your work to be considered along with your application. Papers should be submitted as a PDF file and e-mailed to papers@admissions.caltech.edu. To assure consideration, papers should be submitted no later than the application deadline."

I marked that I am going to submit a research paper, but when I just tried to send it to the provided address, it seems to have failed:

Other people have given similar reports.
The deadline is tomorrow at midnight. What should I do?! I sent a message to the office of undergraduate admissions that had the paper attached and that explained the situation. Will this be enough?

Their given email address doesn’t work, and you asked them what to do. I’m pretty sure it’ll work out fine, and there’s certainly nothing more you can do.

It’s a test. Caltech wants to see if their applicants can solve a basic POP3 server error.

Seriously though, Caltech’s mailbox is just full. It will probably sort itself out and the deadline will probably extended if they didn’t receive it in time.

Well, considering that for almost all of the year that particular address is useless, it makes sense that they wouldn’t allocate much space to it. All it takes is for them to get an unexpectedly large number of applications, which I hear they did.

Thank you for your email. Due to the holiday break, the email address papers@admissions.caltech is currently full. We are currently processing submissions to clear out the inbox. Please email your submission again to the papers@admissions.caltech.edu address later this afternoon or tomorrow.

what the crap man…I am still trying it no response…

Just try again tomorrow or in the next few days… admissions people are understanding and aren’t going to fault you if there was a problem on their end.

I sent ugadmissions@caltech.edu an email stating the error, and included my attachments. They replied back Monday afternoon (sent on Sunday) said their papers@admissions.caltech.edu was full, but said they would add my attachments in my email to ugadmissions to my application. Basically: if papers@admissions.caltech.edu bounces, send it to the undergraduate admissions email and state the error, and you should be okay.
