I dont know. But I know this much. If your choice of words is powerful enough on their face, they dont need italics to convey your message or passion. Some professionals would suggest that use of italics or bold letters or underlining in an essay are in fact poor form. I am sure others might disagree, but I am one who says its not necessary. People use italics and bold and underlining in advertising, in internet communications, in texting etc. Essays are showing the university you know how to write a concise, clear, cogent story about yourself which conveys your personality and your writing skills. Words matter. Think of it that way. Good luck.

Italics are used for grammatical reasons, i.e. "she said stupid was a rude word." Stupid would be italicized, not placed in quotes. Words that are not in the English language are italicized or the titles of certain publications...there are plenty of reasons to use italics and if you're applying for admission, they should be used properly.
Not to mention the primary point of italics are for emphasis.

Anyway, I don't recall the application textbox, but it depends if it's a WYSIWYG editor. If it is, you should be able to copy and paste the italics into the editor and it would work. If not (i.e. a textbox like the type used in the quick reply here) then it wouldn't work. Double check if they allow HTML. You may be able to bypass the feature by using word. Do so carefully as it may not work. If there is a preview function, use word and see if it appears in italics. If not, you may be out of luck.

If the online editor has a shortcoming in this regard, I suspect the admissions folks are aware of the issue. I can't imagine they'd hold it against you, or the many others that will have stylized text issues. That being said, I don't think I'd change my essay either, just submit your best work within the tools they provide.

Best of luck.
