Urgent Concerns about Application Policy of EA and ED

Hey, guys! I love U Chicago(non0binding EA) and U Brown. Can I apply both EA and ED simultanously. I am not in US and I receive contradicting answers to that question.
Can you give me a clear interpretation of the policy of EA and ED? Is applying 1ED and several EAs a illegal and dishonest action or a cunny bypass of the rules? What is the consequence of doing so?

You can do both. Chicago is non-restrictive EA.

Doing ED and non-restrictive EA(which UChicago has) is a very common way to explore more options during the early round. In your case, there’s nothing to be worried about.

You need to read each school’s ED policy carefully; some schools DO NOT allow you to have early action applications filed at other schools (but may allow regular and rolling apps to be filed) if you are applying ED.

From Brown’s website

“Early Decision is a plan under which first-year applicants to Brown may apply for admission in the fall of their senior year and receive an admission decision in mid-December. Early Decision is intended for students who consider Brown their top choice. Applicants pursuing admission under Brown’s Early Decision program may not submit an application to another Early Decision plan. Applicants and their families should be aware that Brown’s Early Decision program is a binding agreement to attend Brown if admitted. Students admitted under the program are expected to enroll at Brown and to withdraw all pending applications – including those submitted to Regular, Rolling, or Early Action programs.”

Seems to indicate that you can file both but must attend Brown if accepted. If you love both UChicago and Brown, you’d better make sure you like Brown better before you apply there ED.

Brown recently changed its policy to allow for EA apps in addition to Brown ED. However, ED is binding, so you should make sure it is your first choice.

Yeah, thanks for your help! I think I get a clearer picture! Chicago, Columbia. or Brown, it will kill me!

Since you’re undecided on your favorite, I’d recommend against ED anywhere. But EA is the best thing in the world, because if you do well, you can cut down your list drastically in December, and if you do poorly, you can improve your application or set your sights lower for RD. Just remember to apply to enough schools to compare FA packages if you’re not wealthy.
