URGENT: For March 2010 SATers who want to stab the CR curve

i got all the sentence completion correct, which is a total miracle and got 3 wrong on reading… and i get a 740. i was predicting a 750+ but i’ll take the 40 pt improvement.

That’s what I feel like. The SAT is just a number to the colleges. “Oh you scored 2200, that sucks, we have a bunch of 2300+ applicants here though.” but in reality, you could have missed less than 10 questions total on the test.

I’m just in schock that a -3 (really a -4) is a 740… that had to be a 800 790 780 760 740 curve… insane.

Did anyone call Collegeboard yet? I’m one of those 3 wrong 0 omits 740 people btw.

It would probably mess with their averages if they re-did the curve…unless they chipped more points off people at the lower end to compensate :/

The national average for CR was 501. Basically right where they want it. So yeah, this curve’s a bad deal for most people on CC, but that’s how it is.

And besides, aren’t there all sorts of mathematical formulas that they use to determine the curve? Since it’s a standardized test they wouldn’t just be able to ignore those.

Don’t get me wrong, a more lenient curve would be great. Especially for those with -3 in CR - that does seem like it deserves more. Changing the curve after scores have already been released just looks pretty impossible, but hey. You don’t know if you don’t try.

I’m a -2/780 btw.

Yeah, I’m still finding out a little bit more about formally petitioning the Collegeboard. I’ll let you guys know what happens/how you can help.

Yea the curve really sucked. I mean seriously -2 not being an 800 is ridiculous. Although I must admit, the CR was comparatively easier than other practice tests I’ve taken.

There’s really nothing that we can do at this point.

I was -4 730. So I’m guessing it went:

67: 800
66: 800
65: 780
64: 760
63: 740
62: 730

If so, ouch.

i got 2 wrong and every other year in the HISTORY OF THE SATS it woulda been an 800. Of course this happens to me. ■■■

Sigh…the curve isnt dictated by the difficulty level of this particular test and your fellow test-takers in that month. It’s created through comparative analysis of PAST march curves.

6 wrong = 710CR.
Not surprised, though I thought the curve would be higher… Unfortunately, on the October test, I got 6 wrong and 1 omit, and that was a 720.

I was surprised that my daughter’s score was lower by a good 150 points compared to her practice tests–and then I saw she actually had gotten fewer questions wrong on the actual test than on the practices. Six incorrect on the WHOLE TEST. I scored her practice tests with her and those raw scores on the practice tests have been worth about 40 more points on each section than she received!

The tests vary in difficulty. The curve adjusts for this, so that in this case, when the CR portion of the test was determined to be easier than most other SATs, the curve had to be harsh so that a 600 on two different tests would mean the same thing. The curve is not capriciously determined nor is it a reflection of the preparation of the test takers (and the average CR score is not adjusted to be a particular number, for example, 500).

Pained by the curve? Take the test again; the curve will probably be different.

CB has committed treason…we must fight this until death
