I currently go to University of Houston and thinking about transfering. At the end of my first year I will have around 32-35 hours and am predicting I should have a 4.0-3.9 GPA for sure. Plenty, plenty of extra-curricualars such as manager of a store, head counselor for a camp for 2 years, etc. Only problem is high school record. Rank is top 34% (213/623) 3.2/4.0 GPA, and 1020/1600 SAT scores (1560/2400) Have not taken any SAT 2's or AP classes. Although high school record is bad, college record is excellent.

The classes I took/will take for my first year are art history, history 2, history 1, political science 1, introduction to ethics, english 1, english 2, microeconomics, philosophy: introduction to the mind, introduction to sociology, and physical geology. I have not taken any math classes, but I plan to take them in the summer of '07, but those won't transfer before the deadline. Are those decent classes to take to guarantee admission?

However, will I have any chance at transfering? If so, how much of a chance? Long shot, likely, most likely or guaranteed? Thanks yall, I NEEEED to know soon so I can start to apply.

The transfer application that can be downloaded from website says:
"At least 30 total transferable semester hours from an accredited college, with at least six hours in each of the following disciplines: English, math, social science, natural science, and foreign language."

So not having math or foreign language may hurt unless you have AP credits to fill those?

Wow, so all transfer applicants MUST meet those requirements or are they just suggestions? Considering my case, can I still apply or will I have to fulfill those requirements?

I went back and looked--it seems it is more dependent on what your high school record shows. For instance if you had 2 years of foreign language in HS, the language may not apply. Also if you met all the high school requirements for admission, it doesn't look like these apply to you.

Minimum Course Requirements
Please remember that the following are minimum course requirements only; admitted candidates typically present credentials that go well beyond the minimum.
Your high school record in grades 9 through 12 must include at least the following:
four years of English;
Algebra 1, Algebra II, and Geometry; if you are applying as a sophomore transfer, at least four units of college preparatory mathematics (two algebra, one geometry and a higher level mathematics course for which Algebra II is a prerequisite);
three courses in science (one biological, one physical, and one lab science);
one course in social science; one course in United States history; and
two years of the same foreign language.
If your high school record lacks any unit in English, math, science, U.S. history, or social science or you hold a GED, you must present one of the following in order to meet minimum eligibility for admission:
At least 30 total transferable semester hours from an accredited college or university, with at least six hours in each of the following disciplines: English, math, social science, natural science, and foreign language (the six hours of foreign language is required if you graduated high school in 2004 or after);

I've met all those requirements in high school easily. So if I have met the requirements in high school, do I still need the "suggested" courses to transfer or can I still transfer with basic classes such as history, govt, etc. Only thing is I have not taken any math my first year, I hope that doesn't hurt me!

It looks like you would be fine as long as you had all the HS courses. One thing to remember is that if you transfer after freshman year, your high school record still comes into play more than it does if you transfer after soph. year. (Or so I've been told)

My daughter was a sophomore transfer into UNC, so I might be able to help just a bit. As long as your high school courses meet the requirements, it will not matter that you have not taken a math or whatever courses they want. My daughter also did not take a math her freshman year as she had completed AP Calculus AB in high school.

As a sophomore transfer your high school record will be very important; this includes grades as well as SAT scores and AP classes. UNC also really looks at your essays, so take extra care with those. As far as the course you have taken in college, be aware that UNC (or any college for that matter) may not accept the course you have taken for credit. Sometimes you might get just the hours to be used as an elective, and sometimes the course will not count at all. While it looks like you have taken course that will transfer, they may not fit the general undergrad requirements which can be real picky as to which course will fill a requirement.

Yeah, thats the only thing im worried about. My college record is great, but as for my high school record (as you can see in the first post) is iffy. Do you still advise me to go ahead and apply?
