Urgent: Northeastern vs GW Engineering

Hello,

I’m currently a high school senior who delayed my decision till the absolute last minute and need help making my decision. I’ve narrowed it down to between George Washington University and Northeastern University.

For Northeastern: My first year will be costing me about $71,000 my first year and I would be in the NUin program at Australia. I enjoyed the dorms there and the food seems good. Northeastern’s reputation in engineering also seems very good, but the co-op program is where I have mixed feelings. For one, with people constantly leaving to do co-ops, it seems very difficult to keep a good group of friends that are in Boston. Keeping social connections is an important part of my life. In addition, if I do a co-op away from Boston, I don’t really know what I’d be doing during my downtime there. I also have intentions of getting my masters degree in a combined program but have heard that it is difficult to actually keep up with the academic rigor in a combined Bachelor/Masters program at Northeastern.

For George Washington: DC is by far my favorite city as I love the environment, but ironically I have little to no interest in politics at all. Furthermore, the reputation of GW engineering is not the best, though it is receiving more funding. The Foggy Bottom campus is the one I did enjoy, while the Mount Vernon one was lackluster. While I did like some of the dorms, others don’t seem to be in the best conditions. It would also cost me about $55,000 my first year. I do think the environment is better though for me socially to be able to keep good connections. I just don’t know if the engineering programs are considered to be good for when I inevitably have to find a job or internship, or if they would prepare me even close to the degree that Northeastern would.

I was hoping to gain some advice or insight on what others have to think about my situation.
