Hi all, I am an ecuadorian student willing to apply to some universities located either in the USA or Canada.

Here are my choises

USA
U of Pittsburgh
U of Minnesota
Penn State
Ohio State
Purdue University

Canada
McGill
U of Toronto
U of BC

My highschool average / 20 is 18.4, which translates to 3.68 using a 4 scale...

I don't have many EC's except from a literacy program for the iliterate people living in my country...

I'm willing to study Computer Science, Software engineering, or something related to the computers field. (But I am really flexible, and could consider anything as long as it's something I like)

My final scores were:

SAT: 1700
Math (620) +Wr (540): 1160

I also took these SAT II:

Math I:600
Physics: 570

Toefl: 104

I'm really disappointed with those scores, but I don't have the time to take exams again...

I don’t know much about admissions at most of the schools you posted above but I am from New Jersey and know alot of people who got into Penn State and UPitt with scores similar to yours!

One factor working in your favor is that many state schools are more open to accepting international students than before due to the budget issues. Purdue, for example, is 15% international. Keep in mind that some of the schools have tougher computer science programs, so this is assuming you apply undeclared.

U of Pittsburgh - match
U of Minnesota - high match
Penn State - low reach
Ohio State - low reach
Purdue University - high match

Canada
McGill - reach
U of Toronto - high match
U of BC - low reach

Your TOEFL score is great!
If you have the option to choose the test scores your want to submit, I would DEFINITELY pick that one. (Your SAT scores are not bad, however, they might hurt you because many internationals apply with outstanding scores.)

Depending on where your live, your school system might be more demanding. Consequently, your GPA would be higher once you have taken that into consideration (-> weighted GPA). I would contact for example educationUSA to ask them about it.

Canadian universities go mostly by average - as Canadian schools grade on a percentage scale, your 18.4/20 will translate into 91.6 (unweighted) I think - and that is very good and will qualify you for entrance scholarships at many Canadian universities.

Additionally, Canadian universities are much cheaper.
I would definitely look into more universities in Canada, because admission will be easier there and the quality of education is remarkable.
