urgent question about housing to current students.

hi. i got the supplemental housing option and i don relaly like it at all. i mean four people in one room? mann i will prolly never study in that kinda environment. i was hoping for a double room. oh well anyway i was searching for housings in austin and found many apartments that are wayyyy cheaper than on and off campus dorms. i was like wat the ****k~~. so now im thinking about living in those little apartments. but is it okay to live there? i mean is it incredibly crappy or is it okay? cuz i saw many with 480 and 500 somethinig for a single room which is really cool. if u or ur friends live in one of these apartments. please tell me how it is. do u think i will be okay if i decided to live in one of those places? do i have to have a car if i decided to live there?? so many questions...

yes but remember that apartments dont include food, which is very expensive

You'll also have to furnish it

How long does it take to get campus housing if you get supplemental housing first? Or will you be stuck in supplemental housing for quite a while before you get an opportunity to transfer to campus housing?

Another thing to consider is that off-campus housing contracts are often for 12 months vs on-campus housing contracts which are just for the school year.

Unless you plan to live in Austin year-around, you will have to pay rent for an unused apartment or you will have to sublet it for substanitally less than your rent payment. If you sublet, the subletter could trash the apartment but you will be responsible for the damages.

Off-campus housing also may not include utilities - electricity, gas, water, etc.

I'm not trying to promote on-campus housing, but dorms include a lot of things that off-campus housing does not. You need to look at the total package, not just the rent cost.

BTW, UT is opening a new dorm, Duren in the Spring semester. That s/ open up some doubles by no later than that semester.
