URGENT Question: Under the table paid job

Paki, as everyone said, it’s safe to do so.

I have a similar situation here. You know for Mu Alpha Theta if you tutor over 10 hours the tutoree has to pay for the hours over that (or if you choose, can make them free so you can put them down on your tutoring log). So I did like about 50 hours for this guy (I paid $ 7 per hour that means total of 280 dollar). And the problem is it’s in cash and I didn’t pay taxes. Before this thread I thought it’s not a problem to put it down. Now I have a lot of doubts? Anyone?

SkyHigh, you should have no doubts.

Your situation is completely different. Anything that small is a non-issue for both taxes or financial aid. There’s a huge difference between a 20-40 hour per week job and a few tutoring hours, babysitting, mowing the neighbor’s lawn, etc.

speilhei- i understand ur anger. i agree that what i did was wrong, but i was 15. Before AP Gov, I didnt even know too much about taxes. In all honesty, at the time i saw nothing wrong ( i didnt even think about it).

now, I just want to be rewarded for my hard work and i dont want a mistake made 2 or 3 years ago to overshadow the rest of my life.

i need a final consensus??? should i de-exaggerate my hours so they wont ask too much about it???

i have no contact with any co-workers or my previous employer and thus no way to prove it. should i still write it??

Paki - I think I’ve been clear as has everyone else. Write it on your ap; you won’t get caught.

so no DE-exaggerating or anything. just the honest truth and i will not be accused of anything correct??? i raelly hope you guys are right.

Why are you still asking! You have two full pages of replies! WRITE IT ON YOUR APP.

Now, let this thread die.

my family is scaring me now…they are saying that the colleges can pull my entire employment history using my social security number and when they dont see the job, they will know it was illegal and ask me for more information.

I dont want to get in trouble or get my family in trouble.

Sorry for reviving this thread but my fears are taking over me agian.

I really don’t think it’s much to worry about. I worked over the summer and part of the school year for my parent’s restaurant. I’m listing that I was a waiter, but since many apps. don’t ask for the employer, I cannot really let them know. I am not worried however, since it was a legitly paid job and something I did for 3 summers in a row.

^my job was not legitly paid. It was under-the-table cash. I am thinking about just cutting my hours to show on the app and just say i worked 20 hours per week for 2 months over the summer…even though i worked a lot more.

however, my family is totally against me putting any mention of it on there because they are saying colleges will find out it was not a legit job and reject me or worse, i will get caught by IRS.

bumppp please helpp…

I really doubt that any college is going to go to the trouble to pull your tax records. Since you are no longer working at that place, and haven’t worked there in the present tax year (where it could affect your FAFSA), stop worrying about it.

As I wrote above, you can always come clean with the IRS and treat this as self-employment. They can go after your ex-boss if they want to. It is not likely that the IRS is going to go after you for back taxes, or bring any charges against you, because YOU WERE JUST A KID. The people responsible for this mess were the adults.

There is a parent who posts under the name Taxguy (or it may be taxguy) here. Search for one of his most recent postings, and then send him a PM with your problem. He actually knows about stuff like this and would be able to advise you.
