URGENT URGENT CB math question

Jorge bought 5 pencils from the store. He gave the cashier a fve dollar bill and got back $0.75 dollar in change. Jorge saw that he had gotten too much change, and he gave $0.25 back to the cashier. What was the price, in dollars, of each pencil.

bumpppppppppppppp

bumppppppppppppppppp

Jorge originally received $4.25 in change but then he gave back $.25 so he payed $4 for for pencils (assuming there was no tax) and the price for each pencil is 4/5 = 80 cents per pencil.

wrong^^^^

CHar

its 90 cents per pencil. Jorge gives back 25 cents so that makes the correct change he should recieve 50 cents so all the pencils should cost 4.50 and for each you just divide that by 5

^Beat me to it. Damn.

I’ll break it down for you though.

5 pencils.
*Paid $4.25
*Got $0.75 in change.
*Payment + change = $5

5 pencils
*Paid $4.5
*Got $0.5 in change (Jorge had received too much change, so you must reduce the amount of change he got). He gave $0.25 of his change back to the cashier, so he’s down from $0.75 to $0.5 in change.
*Payment + change = $5.

The pencils were actually $0.9 each (4.5 / 5).

Why cortana was wrong:

You have to keep the change separate from the payment. When he gives back $0.25, Jorge is giving back $0.25 from his $0.75 change.

Simple.
5 pencils. Paid 5 dollars. Got 0.75 change. Gave 0.25 back. So now Jorge got 0.50 change. This means he paid 4.50 for 5 pencils. 4.50/5 = 0.90$ per pencil.

Change: $0.75 - $0.25 = $0.50

Jorge gave the cashier a $5 bill and received $0.50 as change. Thus, the cost of four pencils must be $4.50

$4.50/5 = $0.90 [answer]

0.90 is right.

But I cant understand something. Didnt jorge give $0.25 to the cashier as tips, so $0.25 doesnt count as pencil price ???

No, he didn’t give 0.25 as tips. He got 0.75 in change. He realized that the cashier made a mistake, and gave him 0.25 back, as an act of honesty. Therefore, his final change result is 0.50 after giving 5 dollars which means that 5 pencils cost 4.50$

OHHHHHHHH

Not tips that cleared the confusion. I was mocking collegeboard for counting tips in the calculation. Collegeboard needs to be clear in asking the questions.
