Urging Penn State students to show their TRUE colors about the scandal

And HECK Sandusky is not in JAIL now- free, no bail, I hear.

Please, for your own sake, stop misspelling the word ‘vitriol’ and punctuating your posts with it; it instantly makes you sound even less sane.

There is absolutely no need to wait for a trial before discussing the facts of this situation, many of which have been made public by the participants themselves, including Joe Paterno, who admitted he could have done more to help the children victimized by Sandusky.

The facts are these:

a. Sandusky was seen anally penetrating a child.
b. Paterno was notified that something upsetting had happened between a boy and a grown man in the showers.
c. He passed on this information to his superiors, who covered it up and pressured Sandusky to retire one year later.

Now, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Paterno was actively involved in the cover-up and knew much more about Sandusky’s hobbies than he lets on, but that is not even what he’s being judged for. The above chain of events boils down to this: Paterno did not do enough to follow up on these rumors and make sure no children would ever be raped on the premises of his football facilities ever again. We don’t need to wait for a trial to condemn him for this because it is not a criminal, but a moral failing, and a tremendous one at that.

Of course we’re judging other people’s reactions. So are you right now, only your judgment is hyper defensive and myopic, and displays no concern for the only true victims in this case.

Right. Because an adult witness to child rape is just a “charge.”

I agree this is an excellent chance to explore ethical issues with our children. We can talk about what one should do should they witness the rape of a child in progress. We can talk about reporting to a football coach is never a reasonable action. We can talk about how college students are adults and adults rioting because someone who failed to take the right step (call the police…it’s really very simple) was fired is shameful beyond measure.

There is a lot of ethical ground to cover, on that we agree.

Ghosst: I’ll agree to apologize for misspelling vitriol in two posts, if you agree to apologize to all of the posters who you’ve called crazy, delusional, pathetic, insane, and other names in your history of postings on CC. Thank you for providing a good example of my point.

Pugmad: I agree with you. I clearly don’t think anyone is concluding that Mr. Sandusky himself is innocent, although he’s certainly entitled to his day in court. The sooner the charges are presented to a jury, the better. It’s frustrating that the police have not been able to locate the poor child involved in the shower incident as part of their investigation. Not only would it permit the child to receive whatever assistance is needed, but it would obviously strengthen the case against Mr. Sandusky.

It’s impossible for me to understand how Mr. McQueary could have left that boy in the room with Mr. Sandusky if he thought he was seeing an assault. Perhaps some good will come out of this, if it elevates sensitivity to the fact that it’s everyone’s obligation to stop the bad guys.

I’m not sure that we’d be in agreement on the reasons for the riots. Frankly, I’m not sure that the rioters themselves were all in the streets for the same reasons. My Penn State grad is hearing different things from different people in State College. Again, another important thing to discuss with our children.

Hey smart guy. Your facts are wrong. Thanks for assisting in the stew of hysteria and misinformation.

But you shouldn’t feel alone. Most of the journalists I’ve listened to have obviously not read the grand jury report.

I did in fact read that report, so I’m really interested in hearing which of “my” facts are wrong.

Also, I am not male.

dadx, which of those three facts do you dispute, and on what basis?

ETA – although heaven knows, the first fact alone should have rung the alarm that would have stopped this long ago.

sax, does writing this sort of tripe actually make you feel better? I am glad that my kids do not derive their sense of self worth from the institutions they attend.
