URM 2.5 GPA 2100 SAT and We're Going For It

Thanks for the update! With seven financially equal options, how is he going to narrow down his choices?

Nice choices.

The important thing to note is that you cast a WIDE and varied net in these applications.

Slimlady and Son–Congratulations! I am so proud of you and your son and the direction you to during this application season that I literally screamed when I read the schools that accepted your son.

What a wonderful situation your son is in–deciding between not 2, not 3, not 4, but SIX AFFORDABLE schools!

Rock on!

Woo hoo!! Fantastic results :)

Don’t forget to figure in cost of airfare when calculating Case Western. Flying during thanksgiving week is expensive. However, the facilities and attention from a private school are so surprisingly better (in general) than public, that you should really consider it. However, the culture will be very different from CA. Hmmm, more decisions ahead.

S has made his choice. Cal Poly Pomona it is! Hard to turn down such an attractive offer from Case, but as the year has progressed I think he’s determined he’s not quite ready to spread his wings so far away. And that’s ok with me! :)

Very nice! Congratulations!

@Slymlady I’ve been following this thread from the beginning… rooting for you and your son all along! Sounds like a great fit! I’m so happy for you guys!

And be sure to point him to the four year pledge:

@slymlady

Congrats to you son.
He is lucky to have such a supportive mom.

Best of luck to all of you.

Excellent choice Slymlady! He will thrive wherever he’s at, and he’s very luck to have you for a mother. Good luck to your son!

Congratulations! Yes, let him sign the 4-year pledge to make sure he doesn’t spend 6 years in college because he loves it too much
I might have been tempted by CWRU because, as a private university, it’s got a lot more support such as walk-in tutoring centers, more resources, small classes (there are more faculty at CWRU for 4,500 students than at CPP for 22,000! Yes I was kind of shocked when I saw that… Logically, almost all CWRU classes 20 or fewer students which makes it very hard to fade… or skip…, whereas only 12% CPP classes do). On the other hand, it’s true it’s very hard and Cleveland’s very different from California even University Circle is a research hub. If he’s not up to the cultural difference and academic rigor, CPP makes sense.

From page 1 of this thread:

Result: the OP’s son was admitted to Case with a very generous scholarship.

From page 2:

Result: OP’s son accepted at SDSU.

Inspirational! Don’t listen to naysayers who say forget it, you have no chance! Great result OP.

The key here is that this student cast a wide net. For the most part, he was not accepted at the more selective schools on his application list. However, wisely, he had affordable options where his likelihood of acceptance was higher. This is what ALL students should be doing. Look for those schools where you know you will be happy to attend, and which are affordable, and where you have a good likelihood of being accepted. Then add those more reachy schools to the list.

To be honest, with the exception of Case, this student’s acceptances were sort of right where I thought they would be.

His final choice is an excellent choice for him…has all he wants, is a reasonable size, is affordable! Win/win/win!

Original list:

UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, UC Riverside
San Diego State, Cal Poly SLO
Washington State U - (western tuition exchange)
Penn State (son’s pick)
Cornell, Rice, Notre Dame, USC, Case Western Reserve (longshots and hopefuls)

Results from the original list:

Admitted: UCSC, UCR, SDSU, CWRU
Admitted, too expensive: WSU, PSU (but Erie, not University Park)
Denied: UCSB, CPSLO, Rice, Notre Dame
Did not apply: Cornell, USC

Results from additional schools:

Attending: CPP
Admitted: CSUN
Denied: UCSD, UCD

So mom didn’t too too bad, eh?! A lot of research went into that original list! CC commentary on this thread is what influenced me to add CPP and CSUN. S just wasn’t interested in Cornell or USC. UCSD added at S request, UCD added by mom as a “why not”.

Overall I am pleased with the outcome, and here’s hoping for a successful college experience for S!

Yep, mom did great. I do need to give much kudos to your son too. That 2100 SAT got him a long way and only he did that! One hell of a team effort, beautifully executed.

Yay! I think that Cal Poly Pomona is an awesome choice!

Hope mom does as well in college for him - I’d be uncomfortable having my mom do everything but if it works for them

So judgemental.

@TigerCC2014 - Anyone who feels uncomfortable with their parents helping them completely misses the point of a loving, thoughtful parent-child relationship.

And nice try on the straw man - nowhere was it stated or even implied the parent did everything. The parent was not in the SAT test, was she? The parent did not choose every school, did she? And the parent did not make the final decision, did she? The word we was used many times by @Slymlady; we is a word that members of families who love each other and are helpful to each other use all the time. Try it sometime for it is a great feeling to have a parent like @Slymlady and a great feeling to have a child who trusts you unconditionally to take your advice.

A family is group of people, each with different strengths and resources that loving help each other succeed. Clearly you missed that part of what is a family.
