Any more updates? This thread is what attracted me to CC, I just find your encouragement and your son’s hard work really inspiring! Did he attend the SDUS Harambee event this weekend?

^^Thank you so much!!^^ I was actually planning to post soon, but did not want to bump up this thread with all of the excitement from actual students getting their acceptances (or rejections).

Fellow Parents, here are our awesome updates so far…

Accepted: Washington State, Penn State (Erie), CSUN, SDSU, Cal Poly Pomona, UC Riverside, UC Santa Cruz, and Case Western Reserve.
Rejected: Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis
Pending: UCSD, UCSB, Rice, Notre Dame

And we’re just getting in from Engineering Scholar Day at Cal Poly Pomona, and its now at the top of son’s list! Could not attend Harambee because of the conflict, but visited 2 weeks ago and he really liked SDSU as well.

Congratulations! (net prices after financial aid and scholarships work out, right?)

If he goes to Cal Poly Pomona, he should investigate its four year graduation pledge program:
https://www.csupomona.edu/~academic/programs/grad_pledge/

BTW, just checked the Case financial aid offer and they gave him such a large scholarship and grant I’m afraid to post it on the Case thread for fear of being attacked. It is now the same cost as an in-state for us.

^The major detractor on the Case thread is no longer a CC member,

@Slymlady
My daughter got a huge scholarship too. We are full pay at the UCs, and now Case is even cheaper for us. Not sure if my D wants to attend though, but it’s an option.

Thank you Slymlady for the amazing update! I’ve been lurking on CC for well over a year but was afraid to start an account or even post after I got one, just because it can be a little intimidating here. I know that you and your son are excited beyond belief. My daughter (also a SoCal URM) has also received a couple of acceptances from schools this month, and it’s just nice to have actual choices, and very much affirming to know that several colleges actually want your kid to represent their institutions.
We attended the SDSU Harambee this weekend, but my daughter isn’t too keen on going. Probably because we are actually in SD and it’s a bit too close to home.

These are just great results, congratulations again and thanks for coming back with an update. I tried to page through but the thread is sooo long…did you even give the UW gpa without freshman year or the UC weighted gpa? For future students benefit. He must be so thrilled. Case gave that much whoot amazing! I never saw that coming. Learn something new every year.

I didn’t see the original thread, but am just reading it all now. Congrats to your son! Awesome results and options. I agree with your philosophy of “going for it.” You will never know the result if you don’t try.

@slymlady Just found this thread. Congrats to your son on his acceptances!! You should definitely post his scholarship info on Case’s forum. This is great info for someone else in the future to see who is on the fence about applying. Can’t wait to see where he ends up.

ETA - This is one of the things I like best about CC (and we all know that there are plenty of things that drive us nuts…) - being able to cheer on the success stories of others. Love it!

To me, this just shows the power and the need for a test like the SAT. Student had almost no chance with his GPA. But, with his SAT scores, he shows he really can think critically and at a very high level. 2100 is in the top 4% of all scores, I believe. That makes it easy to overlook his freshman year GPA and fully credit his upward trend. He is going up, and his SAT scores shows he has the brainpower to keep going up.

Congrats! Not sure if it’s relevant, but my son started not too far from yours, is now a junior in mech eng, and just bought clothes for this years nsbe conference in Tennessee.

I know I nagged you about a lot but I want to say congratulations to you and your son. You got “smart” in the process and created a great list for you son. Isn’t it nice to have these options and at prices that you can afford. I wish you and your son all the best in the future. Now just remind your son that for he high school he is a role model and he needs to live the life of a role model by showing kids at this school it can be done. He needs to make sure to bring some younger students “up” with him.

My own DD has had great mentors and they have all reminded her to make sure to pay it forward.

Best of luck and I am so happy for you.

Congrats and thanks for filling us in.

Thank you everyone for your support.

P.S. Rejections at UCSD and UCSB. No worries!

Congratulations to your son, Slymlady, and thank you for the update. He will do well at whatever school he chooses.

Congrats. I bet your son will do fine no matter where he ends up.
I had a similar S (not URM) who is now several years post grad. We also had him apply to a wide range of schools. He got in quite a number of places that most would not have predicted based on HS GPA…He ended up doing not great but okay in school. He has been continuously employed since college graduation. He has done awesome in the workplace.
I wonder if a female with a lower GPA but high SAT scores ends up with similar results. I think colleges might be more willing to take a chance on a male.

The CSUs that comprise much of the list admit purely by formula, major, state residency, and local residency. However, except for the non-impacted majors at the few non-impacted campuses, admission thresholds are not determined or announced beforehand. But gender or race does not matter to the formula.

Congratulations! I am so happy for you and your son.
This is amazing. Case Western Reserve is as good as Cal Poly and University Circle is great (look up “welcome to the circle” in youtube) - since they gave him such a huge scholarship, it means they really want him to attend so it might be worth it to explain he’d like to visit but can’t afford to, they may have a sort of “post admission fly in” in place.
UCSC, CPP, and SDSU are also all wonderful choices. What a great problem to have - an embarassment of riches :p

All decisions are now in and so glad this process is over! What a ride! Thank you everyone for your support, suggestions and encouragement. Overall I think the process gave my S confidence and motivation for the future. Its been a great learning lesson. Its not over till its over!

Final Tally:
Accept: SDSU, CPP, CSUN, UCR, UCSC, WSU, PSU, CWRU
Reject: SLO, UCSD, UCSB, UCD, Notre Dame, Rice

Financially all instate acceptances are feasible between CalGrant A and additional grants/scholarships. Case also was quite generous and is now the same price as our instate options. WSU and PSU are likely financially out.

Final thoughts as a mom: I wouldn’t change a thing!
